Marathon troll out of Converse...

Post by Reelax »

Launched out of converse Saturday with Tunamas and Dreamcatcher aboard hoping we could locate silver. Only 2 other boats out at 530am and the water was flat calm with surface temp around 46. We motored to our 1st location and set 2 riggers down 10-15 back 30, 2 slide divers back 40 and down 12-20, and 2 minidisc on mini boards back 100... by 630am our counter was at 5, so the fish where there... mostly Lakers, with one 19”ish salmon there... we stayed for a few passes and then started our search in earnest...

Many Many cormorants all spread out on the lake diving deep for bait and eating all day. South of the mansion we found a small bay where there were about 40 comerants who had pushed a bait pod into the shallows and they were creating a bait boil and having a feast. It is scary to see this birds all working together to eat so much bait so fast... we did a few fish out from where they were and the whole spectacle was over in just a couple minutes...

Notable sightings today included a peregrine falcon flying around its nesting sight and buzzing us cause we were near and also an alligator gar on the surface in the muddy water later in the day...

This was the 2nd trip this year where the comerants were diving And feeding around the boat so much, at times we could make out a cormorant on the sonar!!!

Well we went back to basics for our BBQ today and started with hot dogs, followed up with cheese burgers.... good lake food, especially between rods firing...

We trolled south, way south... our water covered ranged from the outlet of Thorpe brook in townfarm bay, all the way to the mouth of beaver creek, 15 miles to the south... we found silver both north and south, but had to work for them hard. Finding them between the adult lake trout that seemed to hit everything today is the challenge.... Man the girth on some of those Lakers are getting huge! For a while, seemed like we have our average fish over 10lbs...

The salmon liked spoons today and the Tres Amigo’s fired best with the purple people eater was a close 2nd... Both these spoons were on a MP6 Honey bee blank...

We released the salmon quickly, so not many pics, but the Lakers release easy this time of year with nice cold surface temps... noted some adult Lakers with NO lamprey wounds....

Warmest water we found was in the 54 deg range way to the south. Water was mostly mud color until you got south of The creeks and then we found stained green water to try...

On water at 530am, off water at 430pm... been a while since we have made a 50 mile, 11hr cruise, but with the counter at 19 by 4pm we earned every click... good derby test of equipment and crew...One more scouting trip and it’s time for the DYP!!

Thanks for all the laughs and great food yesterday guys... can’t wait t do it again.

John,

Here is the website for the rod trees... they are the same company that makes some of the best tree stands....

Were you out yesterday.? I think we spotted a 19’ striper at one point....

Holy Cow Matt..............I love those tree stands! I have two of them ! Due to personal issues I don't the boat in the water. I will post a pic soon but my handle is striper but that is not what I have. I have a Crestliner Sportfish 19.5. I had prior plans so can't fish the DYP but would have loved to. Thanks again ! Talk soon, John

I look forward to your posts because you are so detailed and provide such valuable and obviously proven info! I have embedded a few of your tactics in my arsenal because of this!!! Great post and........ Yes! Those Lakers are definitely not starving.
F@#%$ng Cormorants need to be dealt with. They could quite realistically drive some of the fish pop. to threat of extinction!
Awesome stuff. Looking forward to the next post.

Agreed. I called it as a "gar", and the spotted gar are smaller. I think it was a longnose, but 40+". Good fish, cruising in the surface scum, and I wish I had a rope fly rigged to throw at it! I don't think there are alligator gar in Champlain.
