March Madness Salmon action

Post by Reelax »

Saturday looked boarder line for wind but Sunday looked even worse, so Tunamas and Fathead jumped aboard and we launched right behind Country Angler and crew at 7am with Converse bay looking flat. We decided to head to a promising section of water but had to cross the pond to get there. What looked like relativity easy water turned out to be 3-4 foot roller that were left over from the blow the previous night and we slowly crossed while icing up the bow and any gear exposed.

We setup in Essex and headed south with the blow.. I kept saying don’t worry it will settle down in a few min... by the time we finished our 1st troll south the swells had built more!

We ran shallow program 90% stick baits on the big otter boards with a single split shot sinker up 6ft.

We had our 1st fish on the 1st pass and when we approached the southern end of our troll we landed a SALMON... not bad either, around 21-22” and very heathy looking. Quick pic to prove they are there and back in she went. Jeremy is. now talkin smak. Cause he called the troll and the bait color and brand and his head got bigger and bigger...
After a while We had to duct tape his mouth

I had been mentioning how flat the water must be in town farm and had suggested a pick and run a few time before the silver hit. Jeremy’s was adamant, “ this is where they are this is where we are fishing”.

Well around 930am we started to be able to see out of most of the swells and the sun started heating the shoreline. We hit stretches of warmed water and trolled in 10-15fow with the inside board hitting moorings and shore just to keep the sticks in the zone.

Water was 34.5 in the morning warming to 35.3 buy 4pm..

Great to hear reports from country angler thru the morning, they were working different water and we were trading results to increase odds... After a little while they trolled north to join us.. I was surprised to see we were the only 2 boats out. (Other than the 2 guys fishing in a jonboat in whalons by the culvert..
Our counter was approaching double didgits and it was almost lunch time. We threw some wings on and started to slowly BBQ them, when Scott grabbed a rod and played a very nice silver that was very clean looking. It ended up being the fish of the day...

All the salmon we caught today were over 21” except 1, and the last one I caught was almost solid silver, only 2-3
Spots on a side.. looked almost like a Cisco!!??

We started at 7 and by 4pm we had pretty much worked off the fishing itch... highlight of the day was Scott’s 7lb, 26” pig caught mid day in the sun... That is what we come for, and it seems they still are out there!!!

Thanks for the laughs and great memories guys!!!

Fish on!

Great start yesterday! You never know with the wind and it laid down. Good job! It looked really muddy in Town Farm from the run off from a photo I was sent from the air. Good decision to stay!

Man! I was supposed to be right out there same time but something came up and clashed with my timing. I am contemplating an am run right now! Your post is makng it hard not to jet out there!
As far as your post...Wow! You guys killed it! Absolutely fantastic fish! "MARCH MADNESS" is right! The wings may take the prize of the day though!
Do you mind me asking, What kind of "Stick baits"you were chucking out there? Also, were you getting them close to shore at around 15'? I wasn't 100% clear on that part of your post.

Great Pics. Great post.
Thanks Fellas!!

Yo-zuri pin minnows 2.5” worked best, but any very small sticks will work as long as they have a good action, a rattle is bonus...

Lines are brought close to shore with otter planer board presentation, In one pic you can see a board carrying over 10 releases which is a sign that side has been busy. It was retrieved to get the releases back😒 ;)

Good
Luck!

Great job on a windy day. Hope to get out this week if it ever stops snowing (another 3 inches here in Waterbury today).
