Birthday Fishing Trip

Post by Detritus »

9 years ago today, after 4 boys, my first baby girl was born. Today, she came fishing with me, and two of her brothers.

Launched out of redgate today after scouting it last night. All of the rain and warm weather opened our favorite launch back up.

Idled out about sunrise, and temperatures just below freezing. Set a variety of spoons and our trusty early and late season purple challenger on 3 colors and a planer board.

Once that was set, we cooked breakfast. Egg and cheese sandwiches, sausages, and fruit.

The first fish came off of the purple challenger. Tess was up.

No big deal for this girl, she catches lots of big fish.

We trolled north along the new York side, waves about a foot out of the south. Fished from 12' down to 100' down, ran cheaters on the deep riggers.

Met up with Dilly Worm, talked with Brimstone Troller, and Brody said he saw Surprise out there. Even talked to the guys aboard a Sea Ark today.

After trolling through whallon bay, picking up a doubles there, and a few more Lakers, we tried trolling for a master angler warm water fish up tight to shore for an hour. No bites.

So back to the mouth for us, and there was a lot going on on the sonar there.

We saw that stuff on the way out too, but, we were cooking breakfast, and couldn't fish too hard.

Picked up a few more fish before heading in.

Fish of the day was probably this 5 1/2 lb laker. Again, the same honeybee from a few weeks ago that Liam for his PR salmon on.

So we went 9 for 13 today, all Lakers. First time in a long time, no salmon for us. But that's OK, got to hang out with friends on the lake, and Tess caught some birthday Lakers. I don't think we got 1 fish off of the deep spoons. All 50 feet to 15 feet down. 2.3- 2.6 mph GPS, surface water temperature 40℉.

Glad she caught some birthday fish !

Great report and photos as always ! Sounds like the Country Angler picked up more fish than us or anyone we talked to today, nice job.
I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !
Keep Calm and... Fish On !

Happy Birthday Tess.
Seems like another fun outing on the Country Angler.
Nice pics with lots of smiling faces.
How did the windshield defrosters performed?

Oh, yeah, I forgot to report on the upgrades. The defroster worked well, however I think it needs a little more cfm to work quicker, I bought a pretty cheap fan being less than $20. But, it moves the heat really well, and I can swap that out easily if I wanted to.

If the wheel got too hot because of the rising heat, and you didn't want to turn the heat down, you just turn that on, and it sucks the heat up front.

But, the most noticeable thing was the relocation and replacement of the steering cable. Steering the boat today literally took less effort than steering my truck. I'm not sure if it's all just the new cable, or that I used snowmobile grease on the steering tube for the winter, but, it was so smooth.

I only got to steer for a few minutes today, but it was effortless.

Good work country angler and crew! Love all the boat mods they look factory clean!! Awesome to see the next generation of fishermen/woman enjoying the sport so much. Not sure if we will make it back up this winter or not. We are getting busy tapping maple trees and also have switched gears into our beagles and running rabbits. Hope all is well and everyone had a good Christmas...if not sooner we will see you in the spring!

Wow you had a "Party" boat and rather nice weather too!

It was not me out because of home here for the holidays. Glad to see the river blew out and by the looks of water in otter now it will also give a much needed boost to the lake level before it freezes to the bottom in Converse.

That's a great spot to shore fish for sure. The current often bypasses that exact spot, or even swirls the other way there sometimes, so fish can rest.

Liam caught a derby entry sheephead right there one year, and also his first ever walleye. His top 5 biggest fish were all caught from there to the mouth as well.

The bad thing about that spot, much like the basin, is all of the lost fishing gear that's stuck on the bottom right there. It's pretty easy to add to that underwater collection.
