Salmon bite with a 2 boat fleet

Post by Reelax »

Reelax launched at 1st light with Lightandvariable and Dreamcatcher Aboard with Crazy Ivan launching south of us for a search for silver.

We set up a 6 rod spread with 4 down riggers and 2 slider divers with bling from 25 to 60 feet down. After about 3 min and before we got the 6th line in bam a rigger fires and the 1st fish is a salmon! Not even 7am yet and we struck silver.!

Within minutes Crazy Ivan reports same with their own opening silver.... here we go

We troll south down the Ny shore by some great fishing spots picking away at the
Fish with a mixed bag of salmon and lakers.

By the time we saw Crazy Ivan for the 1st time the counter was at 12, and we had 4 salmon aboard and we were bbqing pork spare ribs on the grill at 9am...

It was calm with water temps
Around 52 deg top to bottom. Best area was one of Surprises favorites that seemed to wear us down with fish after fish. I had a salmon and a Laker on the same rod and Jeff and I had tripples on and rods still firing. Ken seemed to smell the fish and didn’t step back into the frea until Jeff and I cried uncle.....

By noon we had 24 fish on the counter and 7 salmon landed...

We had bacon wrapped scallops for lunch but we’re too far from Todd at that point to float him over an appetizer...

With calm water and sun all day we were ready to call it a day by 230pm with the counter one fish shy of 30...

After a quick check with CI we found out that between 2 boats, 23 salmon were landed and released today!!!

What a day and the salmon are back!

great report and pics. food was great so the boss and i cooked up some fresh cod. silvers are still there but most are spawners and are in rivers or pebble shore lines.

All the salmon were between 16-19” Scott. And over half of them came on a dodger and fly combo. I posted a pick of the custom flies I am using.....Flies tied by Theresa’s great uncle who died this year and was a ww2 vet who stormed Normandy on D day (Winston Dezaine-Crafsbury) and fished New Foundland with Ted Williams... these flies are money in Champlain and can’t be found anywhere that I can tell. some of them have a silver tube body woven body that mimic smelt. They are a perfect smelt imitation... from what we saw yesterday :) They we’re tied in the 1970’s but work great in 2020!!

It was a great day on the water. Good to see Relax and his crew out there! We caught one salmon 15 1/2 in and one just touching 18 1/2, all the rest of them were 171/2. In the morning we were 12’ to 18’ down and by 1pm we were catching them 25’ to 50’ down. The action was fast and fun even if they were smaller. We had two triples and at least 5 doubles. We even had a salmon take the line out of my hand when I was hooking on a cheater. Molly has a book she keeps record of our trips and fish with and for the first time ever she just gave up on keeping it all straight.
To be totally honest it felt like the second week of October, not only the nice weather but the classic early season small salmon bite. Looks like the best days are yet to come!

Just a quick question? Where did you launch from and how south did you go? We launched out of Converse on Monday and the water was a little shallow. No salmon but lots of lakers.

We both launched from different places both south of Converse. These are not big launches so I would prefer not to post locations as they are our best Frostbite launch sites and the parking areas are small. I would suggest West Port or Port Henry I’m the NY side for bigger parking lots.

Good point Todd about it feeling like Oct. I can’t wait till the big boys come out of the rivers to play... should be right after rifle season which works for me:)

Those launches are off limits to Vermonters now, unless you quarantine for 2 weeks after you get back. Heard that's the governors newest mandate because of the covid numbers climbing as of this morning.

Nice job out there guys. It's a tough dance you guys do sometimes, sharing information without giving away the answers. I appreciate all of the information you do share, as well as what you don't.

Norski, if you look back at my posts a few threads ago, you'll find the launch I always use that I call Redgate, and important information about how to use it. That launch is not one of the two those guys used, but, it will get you 4 or 5 miles farther south than converse. There is also tons of parking, as there is a big overflow lot to park at if all of the parking by the ramp is taken.

I launched at the crown point bridge, the ramp is now completely out of the water but it’s still perfect for any size boat with a firm bottom to back in on, the dock is long and great to use. If you launch there head right to the Chanel and follow the deep water north.
If you launch out of Red gate I suggest not useing the ramp but the gravel to the right of it. The ramp drops off into never land and guys mess up there trailer and boats using it in shallow water.

Wow! Great report Matt. Sorry I missed that day. I was watching from shore while decommissioning my Hiliner, which was just purchased by a fisherman from Northern Maine. It looked like a beautiful day out there. I picked up a 21’ Boston Whaler Revenge which probably won’t be fully set up and ready to fish until spring but I can’t wait to get back out! The “new to me” boat has reportedly landed many salmon on Lake Michigan, so watch out! (though I may be seeking advice and recommendations regarding onboard barbecue equipment).
