Reelaxing trip trolling the darkside
Decided to change the scenery and trolled the Inland sea for warm water fish on Tuesday. Had a very long trip of over 40 miles on the water and over 9 hrs... Crew included Fishdawg and Dreamcatcher... we had so much food after 3 courses we had to give up and leave the sweet looking
Marinated sirloin tips in the cooler. The menu today included warmed buttered pretzels, Mackenzie hot dogs and marinated Venison back strap...
We used sticks of all sizes colors and shapes. Many fired.... all got yellow perch.
We got 4 species longest 38”...
We spent the day running 6 lines over 20-54 fow and Ran all kinds of sets to mix things up.
Big news was that we had the propane heater going for the 1st time since April!!!
Thanks guys!

lots of great photos... just curious - looks like 3 of the 4 species were smallmouth, pike, and perch, what was #4 ?

Good deal! Is the break from salmon because of the lack of salmon willing to bite or just a change of pace? I was hoping to try the silver fish Saturday....

Probably both.... I like to fish the whole lake and have not given the inland sea it’s due time this year.... lots of great looking bait on graph in some areas, had a ball off the deep water...ReelInvestment wrote: ↑Thu Sep 17, 2020 12:42 pm Good deal! Always fun to change it up every once in a while! What is that stick bait box? It looks pretty sweet.

We have 8 of those okuma cold-water line counter reels. Really like them. Used to be pretty reasonably priced too, I think I paid around 90 to 100 bucks a piece. Well they just showed up in Amazon's "buy it again" thing they do, $200 a piece! Don't know if that's another covid thing or what.
It was real slow cold water fishing for us the last two times out.
The Country Angler is going under the needle currently though, my mother is fixing up our canvas enclosure, and even making curtains for the back. Me and the boys are pretty excited. Going to extend our fishing season with comfort.

Those okumas have great drags and the clickers are loud enough for even the hard of hearing to know when it goes off.... glad to hear your prepped for frost bite... some times in Jan/Feb they will bite almost anything even a beer tab....Detritus wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 8:31 am We have 8 of those okuma cold-water line counter reels. Re: Reelaxing trip trolling the darkside
Speaking of frostbite, are you guys doing a modified version of that this year at point bay? We missed it last year, we were on a scout camping trip.
Dilly, how are you set for your cold weather rig? I think I saw a picture of your new boat with some nice canvas up. How about a Mr. Buddy Heater and a grill? I think those are mandatory, but, I'm not sure.

Re: Reelaxing trip trolling the darkside
I'm excited to try frostbite fishing for the first time. The canvas on the alumacraft is in great shape and its got good protection from the elements. No heater or grill yet but I think I've got time to get all rigged for winter.
I have a lot to learn from the experienced frostbiters. I won't take over this thread with questions, but am wondering if you need to winterize fully, flush the outboard with glycol, etc. after every trip or can you scale back if the boat is in use frequently over winter ?

Re: Reelaxing trip trolling the darkside
Matt do you use any gear for warm-water trolling or just long lining?

Me too, very interested in that box, would like to know who makes that and where to buy one.Gecha (Gerry) wrote: ↑Fri Sep 25, 2020 10:49 am Matt, Love the stickbait box. Can you provide more info.

There are lots of us out here who can learn a lot from these guys. They've forgotten more about fishing than I'll ever know.I have a lot to learn from the experienced frostbiters. But, I'm pretty good with engines. So, one of the cool things about owning an outboard as opposed to an I/O or other kinds of propulsion, is you don't need to winterize them with antifreeze like that. The powerhead, or engine block, is on the top of the whole powertrain, and as long as soon as you pull the boat out of the water, you trim the engine down, (or in, same thing) so that it is vertical, all of the water will run out your prop. Lots of guys also pull the lanyard off, and crank the motor over to spit out any water hanging around in your impeller housing or tubes. Some guys don't. I would recommend that, because help or not, it certainly doesn't hurt anything. Then trim it back up for transport. I also like to store them vertical when I get home.
Other than that, it's like letting it sit for extended periods any other time of the year. Run a little fuel stabilizer, fog the cylinders if it's going to be sitting a long time, drain the carbs, all that. But if you're out every few weeks, just do the drain thing. Don't use your live wells, winterize any of that plumbing just like your camper.
