While the steelies and browns are eluding me, I’m still doing well with the silvers lately, and this is what they’re chasing:

Thanks for the update and picture!
Looks to be about a 3" alewife, 2nd year fish. If you are matching the hatch, that's a good place to start ... then move up and down from there

Haven’t seen any smelt yet, nearly all of the big salmon that I’ve caught in the past couple of weeks have had empty stomachs

Unless they are absolutely crammed with bait and if they are fought very slowly on light tackle, the big ones seem to often purge as a last resort to get unhooked. Don't worry they are still eating! Adult smelt (and 2nd and 3rd year smelt) are very close to bottom in cold water or at least deeper in the water column than same aged alewives
