My LCI

Post by Just Rite (Taycon) »

Well I sit here back in reality at work reflecting on my weekend on Champlain. We arrived Thurs. Docked the boat at point bay I had the pleasure to bring my son in 2017 and 2018. He won the junior cold water with a big salmon in 17. Fished with great friends in previous years and we've done well putting fish on the board several times. Last year my dad. That was great. This year I brought my ringer. My daughter is a nut when it comes to fishing. Finally our schedules matched up.
Thursday we bounced around and caught a pile of Lakers south of juniper. Fri am we fished south of Westport and immediately got into the salmon most were 18-20" putting up a great fight. She then landed a beautiful 8lbr. Sat game plan was to start in the same area then shoot north to diamond which we did and got into the fish. A good mix of salmon and Lakers. On our second run passed the green can just south of diamond Taylor hooked into a monster. It put on a show for us and others (gave more of a story of it on one of relax's posts).
We lost it, regrouped and plugged along till about 2 and headed north for lake trout.
Sunday we started at diamond and got sick of the weeds and went and fished the shoreline south of Westport for a ways and finally found salmon. It was non-stop action for 4 hours with an occasional Laker. Nothing bigger than 21".
Monday we started down where we left off with barely any other boats around. Picked up 8 salmon and one steelhead all before 7am. It slowed down after that as we worked north finally picking up and heading to diamond from lunchtime till 4. We got back into the salmon again all 18-21" and 2 Lakers. One Laker was a short fat 8lbs.
All in all it was an awesome weekend. From Thurs thru Monday we landed 64 salmon and 56 Lakers. All released to swim some more with the exception of one fat 4lb salmon we brought home. We got salmon as high as 20 ft down to 45 with most productive depths between 31-38ft.

Thursday we fished about 6 hrs. Fri sat sun and Monday we averaged 13 hrs a day. So the average for salmon was around 12.5 a day for 5 days of fishing. There were times like Monday morning it was bang bang which helped the average I guess. I also can't sit still, there's a couple lures that seem to produce all the time other than that I'm changing lures a lot till I find one that fires. I think sometimes it helps doing that with riggers, you bring it up and right back down. It always seems to draw fish. I also run a lot of flash on my riggers. Can't have enough bling at times

Great report and wow, a lot of fish taken.

@Taycon You look a little like a chubbier faced Simon Cowell. Hope the "chubbier" part of the comparison doesn't offend you.

And these were our best performing lures minus 2 that are still being washed. A 61 watermelon and wonder bread.

Awesome report! Thanks for all the great info! The last few times I’ve fished I’ve been convinced that there’s not many salmon in lake Champlain any more. It appears that I just need to get better at searching for them! I’ve never once landed 64 salmon in an entire season on Champlain.

Taycon: Those lure pictures are great!! Thank you! You can't realize how much I appreciate that!
The number of spoons with treble hooks is also very revealing, causing a lot more hookups on aggressive fish!

I'll change hooks for action and or tuning spoons and especially if we're dropping fish.

Here at home fishing winni this spring. It was a lot of hide and seek with the salmon. Find em then catch em. Frustrating at times. It may not last long and I tried to move with the fish as best as possible. I'd start with long runs find some and immediately shorten the runs sometimes to only a couple hundred yards hitting a spot at different angles. So I took that mindset to Champlain.

Great report and lots of shared information. We can all benefit from your post. You spent a lot of hours on the water lately and got rewarded with nice catches and great time with your daughter.
Nice pics. Thanks for sharing.
