Reelaxing Tuesday in TownFarm

Post by Reelax »

Hit Converse 1st light on Tuesday, after temp readings, oximeter readings and contact interviews were completed with positive results the crew boarded for a fine day of fishing...

We setup at 1st light with 4 on otters and 2 on riggers. We ran spoons on the riggers and cheaters and ran small sticks on the boards. Water temp was from 44 to 48 with mixed mud
Lines coming out of rivers... we we marked bait, rods fired... bait balls were not easy to find, but they were there.. we mixed in pike, Lakers and pickerel In with our salmon fest today. Salmon topped out at 22” but the fight was strong of the boards especially with little rapala sticks...

We fished over 10 hours just cause we were having such a great time and had so much food to BBQ... we had wings at 10am and 3pm and bratwurst bbq sandwiches at noon....

Wind was an issue all day but John used a mix of autopilot and troll control to keep the helm straight and the fish chasing...

Best news of the day was the adult smelt in the belly of the keeper.. Both laker and salmon were stuffed full of smelt...

All in all we had an epic time pulling lines till 3pm when it was called as we were out of things to BBQ...

Back at it soon!

Boy I bet it was windy down there. My son and I put my boat in at Point Bay Marina around 3PM and the wind was strong. Way to prevail against it, tho.

They are TICA brand Kokanee size. Solid fiberglass blanks with 14 stainless islets... can’t beat the action in an 8ft light weight trolling rod.. the others are also TICAs, just the cork handle version... the blue only comes in rubber/graphite handles.

Good report and yes, definitely seeing some big bait this season. In fact on a couple of short trips I skipped the riggers and just flat lined some big deep diving sticks, Rapala tail dancers, 20 and 30 footers, as well as some jointed J-9's and they did surprisingly well. And after seeing some 5" alwives I added a 6" black and silver smithwicks run behind a mini dipsey and also hooked up. My small springtime sticks have been lazy. Funny thing is that some of these fat lakers barfed up some tiny 1" bait as well as big smelt.

Most salmon and trout are voracious, opportunistic gluttons. If you are present during an aggressive feeding period, any size may work. :o But if the predominance of available forage in the spot you are fishing, happens to be large, the predators will most likely be in the "match the hatch phase". But if the predators have full guts from a prior feeding frenzy, it may be hard to know exactly they are currently surrounded by... Back to the old adage, a properly run lure is far more important than the right size and the right color. But if it is being properly run, then color and size will often make a difference
