Detritus 2019 Fishing Report

Post by Detritus »

Hi guys, I haven't posted on here I think since the LCI, but have visited from time to time. Been busy with the family this year, lots of Scouts, and one 4000 mi camping trip up and down the east coast this summer. We didn't get out on the water as much as I'd have liked to, but, we did get out there and catch some fish. This is our second season fishing cold water species, and after a lot of hours of nothing last year, we're getting it figured out. This is sort of an abridged fishing report for us for 2019.

So, the kids in my family all have their own Handles, from different sources, some from me, some from eachother, so Ill use those to label them. Here's Weemie with a Northern Pike off of a minnow and tipup, Monkton pond.

This one is a little bass from Embden pond in Maine. We managed to get my grandfather out on Detritus with three of his Great Grandsons. Weemie is the one catching fish of course.

Same pond, Weemie with his own little bass. We're aboard one of the 2 17 foot aluminum canoes that we bring with us camping by the way, the "Indiana Jones".

My biggest fish of the year, Northern in Town Farm Bay. I've never actually landed a fish off of the troll. I always have a kid on board who's willing to do it for me. But, when we're casting, occasionally I'll reel one in.

So this guy fooled us bad. It was just me and Weemie out on the boat again, between Diamond Island and the New York side, about 250 feet of water. We were running a salmon spoon presentation down about 40'. We thought we had the biggest salmon ever for a minute. Apparently this sheepshead was on vacation from the cesspools he usually lives in.

Weemie aboard the "Freddie Murcury" out on Bristol Pond. These little bass were fun, boated about 28 of them I think?

Back out on Bristol Pond again, I think a beaver has dammed up the outlet, so there was plenty of water to launch Detritus and get Hambone and T-Bone out for a trip. Here's Hambone with a bass he caught during a session of what he calls "cast and throw" (casting). He's not a huge fan of trolling yet.

Here's T-Bone with her Bass that day. I think I hooked both of these fish, and handed off the rod. You did have to finesse them a little to get them to bite.

Here's The Baby, standing behind a white Perch we caught on lead core trolling for cold water species in October. The thing hit a lake trout spoon behind Cowbells. We were going to whip it back out into the lake without a picture, but, she wanted a picture. Turns out it was a good thing we did, because the fish turned out to be Weemie's 5th youth master angler species, making him a youth master angler for 2019.

Same day, this guy was funny too, wind kicked up some by sloop, and we got a little disorganized. Ended up dragging rigger balls, tangling dipseys with lead core, and at the end of the whole spiderweb mess we reeled it was this lake trout. We packed it in after that to go home and untangle.

This Northern was caught trolling in front of Lewis Creek on the day after Christmas. Only fish of the day. Pretty breezy and grey, we packed it in after a few hours.

Finally one of our Scouting Friends invited us out Yesterday and we did what looks to be like the last fishing trip of 2019. Tried out some new inline planer boards, but caught the fish off of his riggers near Sloop about 15' down.

So that was it for us this year, we didn't get out as much as Myself or Weemie would have liked, but we had a lot of fun, and caught lots of cold water fish for us. Hardly any Pan fish at all though. Kind of weird in that respect. Perch are the only fish we set out to catch and cook for on purpose, and we barely ate any.

I know it's not the traditional depth, location, lure report I'm probably supposed to be posting on here, but if anybody has questions about that stuff for each fish, I could probably remember and post. I'm sure some of you guys were out there yesterday. Good to see lots of boats out there trolling.

Thanks Raz, I try to make it fun for them. Can be hard at times though. Weemie gave one of his friends a "fishing trip" with us for his birthday this past fall. I took the kid out, and found out it was his second time ever with a rod in his hand. I felt some pressure that day to produce. Luckily he ended up boating 4 or 5 bass on bristol pond himself, then like a 6 lb carp and some pan fish out of otter creek later on that day. I was relieved he caught some fish, and a big one too. Kid was excited, and I didn't ruin fishing for him for life, haha.
