Never Give Up !

Post by Dilly Worm »

After 6 hours on Champlain and nothing except 2 smallmouth bass, I was late to get home. So as I was trolling north along the NY shoreline I decided I'd call it a day once I got to Split Rock Point - it's a clear end-point, no waffling, no 'just a little further', the Point is the end.

I get to Split Rock Point and am about ready to reel in when - what's that on the fish finder ? - looks better than anything all day - so I decide to go a few more hundred feet, just enough for the lure to get there(4 colors of lead core out). Then I am really done.

Nothing happens. Time to call it quits. Silly of me to think that after 15 miles on the water a few hundred feet more would make a difference. Got to get home before the wife gets any more . So I pull out the smartphone to text her and say I'm heading -

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Fish ON !

the phone is dropped on the bottom of the boat and I'm reeling in, the fish is putting up a big fight, lots of tugs and head-shakes, diving down deep, taking drag... I am not going to lose this one like the salmon (?) I had on the hook hours earlier !

A decent laker ends up in the boat, caught on the honeybee lure my wife gave me earlier in the week as an anniversary present (I HAD to catch something with that lure after all that time) !

Beautiful sunny day surrounded by fall foliage

I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !

Ya fished hard today out of Wilsboro, feed was on 5 salmon and 7 lakers. Small stingers seemed to be hot today.
Bait marking from 70’ down to 100’. All salmon came at about 30-35’ down on sliders. Lakers came 55’-70’ down over anywhere from 80-170’. Water temp was constant 58 degrees top to 70-80’ down. Speed was up around 2.6-2.9 Oh even had a double on 1 down rigger and slider. All fish released!!

Same story, different day !

If September was the month of the Big Perch of the Deep, October is the month of the Last-Minute Laker, for me anyway...

This Saturday, after almost 5 hours trolling around the NY shoreline where lots of fish were biting the last few weeks, and nothing but a single big perch, the sun was going down and it was time to go home. I reeled in, put the rods away, and crossed the lake back towards the boat ramp and was almost back when - what's that on the fish finder ? Big fish and lots of them ! Maybe there's just enough daylight for a quick try... moments later, a decent laker is in the boat, and I can go home happy. There were lots more out there, but no time... hopefully they stay put for a week !

Never give up !
