9/6 Converse

Post by keithm87 »

Got a late start Friday, on the water at 9:40. Headed across to split rock and started to set gear. Dead calm wasn’t a great sign for fish. Bait was stacked EVERYWHERE birds feeding etc. bait from 10-60 with more at 80. Consistent thick bait clouds extended all the way to snake den. Gear down 60 at the temp break. As I got south the break was less defined and finding 50’s water got down to 75+. No hits to snake den then a bump n run. Decided to move and just try to catch anything. High pressure and sun = lakers. Headed to Westport area, never fished the area before, but navionics showed a finger sticking out to deeper water that came up to around 80. Prime laker land. Set the 2 riggers and had a hit immediately. Lost it, the next 2 hours were a lot of that same thing. I crossed the finger 15-20 times, and had hits every single pass. Doubles a few times. But I couldn’t connect on most. Normally I mess with releases and hooks at that point, but being on the water was enough and losing lakers 50ft down is just as good as releasing them at the boat, so I just stuck with it. Had well over 20 hits, only brought 5 to the boat. But one of those 5 was a pig. Just shy of 14lb making it my PB Champlain laker.
