Hot Dog...... Grand Slam on the Main lake

Had Fishdawg and Dave Fount aboard today and launched on the main lake. Surface temp was 72 and we found 54 down 30 at 1st light. We setup 3 riggers with fished cheaters at 30-34 and 2 slide divers back 50 and down 90 and 120 with a 5 color lead down the shoot...

I was setting up the 2nd riggger when the 1st salmon took the 1st rainbow speedy shiner for a ride... we ended up with 2 salmon both over 19” before 6am on the setup...


We picked away at salmon all morning with fat Ivan, sausage gravy and milk shake and rainbow speedy getting hit the best.

Around noon we tried to bbq some hot dogs, but twin browns crashed the party and ruined our lunch... at this point I thought of a gran slam, but figured we would never get chrome...


20 min later a rigger fires and bam we have a steel head... now all we need is a slimmer...


Well forget that we aren’t targeting slim after a whole day of jumping salmon all over 18” and up to 4.5lbs.... no way.


The hot dogs were great when we finally got to em well done.

By 4pm we had trolled for over 10hrs and decided to call it...

We started trollin across the abyss back to Vt and BAM a Laker takes Steve for a ride.. when he finally lands it... we completed our 1st 2019 Grand Slam... all Of them over 19” too!

wow what a great time. We had a bite going all day! Good to see Tim on the EarlyBird out there...

Congrats on a Grand Slam Matt and great write up! Catching a grand slam is not an easy task, especially the steelhead. I'll be headed up to Apple Island on Thursday and will try my luck out near Stave Island. It is helpful to know where you found the 54 degree water as I don't have a fish hawk..... yet. I will be ordering on shortly, but have been relying on gut instinct and trying different depths until I find them.

Well done! It was good talking with you out there. I managed a few salmon, 1 laker and a small steelie. The fleas were horrible! I'm spooling up my riggers rods with 40lb. mono before heading out again. I was looking for some Cortland "flea flicker" line but found out they went out of business a few years back. Blood Run Tackle evidently makes a "flea-proof" line, but they've seemed to have sold out for the season. If anyone has a lead on where this might be had, please advise.

What an awesome day of fishing! It will be hard to top it anytime soon, or maybe the next time we get out together we’ll do even better! That’s what’s great about fishing! Thanks Matt! Maybe next time out we can do it on my boat or on Fount’s. Regardless, I know we’ll have fun!!

Oh! And I had a wonderful meal tonite of a fine salmon filet that I grilled perfectly. Dam, that fishing is not only a great sport, but it provides fine dining!
