6/8 LCI Scout Trip

Post by keithm87 »

Headed with my buddy Steve to do some scouting for the LCI today. We planned a late start of 7am. When I got to the launch I could see 10+ boats circling the area we were heading, and a big flock of birds diving on it.
We launched and had gear going in the water around 7:20. The water was warm at the surface 63.2, and very stained/muddy. As the goal was finding some big lakers we sent out my spin n glo first and worked to put the other gear in. Other boats were hooking up, around us and soon it was our time to play. First release was on the spin n glo, bump n run, 5 minutes later same story, 15 minutes later and again bump and run. Tightened the release on the chamberlain and sent it back down. We had a little dry spell for about 30 minutes and then we finally boated one, a small laker to start the day.
We stayed around that area and kept with steady action for most of the morning. On the second rigger we were running a cheater, and managed to double on that rod 3 times. 2 were salmon laker and one laker laker. Only completed the deal 1 time, losing a laker on 2/3 but still a blast to have 2 fish fighting each other on the same rod. The one we landed both fish was exciting especially since we had another fish on a different rod at the same time. It was crazy!
We landed 17 in the first area with little size to them, 3 salmon and the rest lakers, with at least 10 misses. All salmon came on the same HB mottled blue mp6 with a custom tape pattern as a cheater.
With no size to the fish we decided around 12:30 to try a new spot. Headed north and set on structure, and while the bite was slow the size was not disappointing. 4/6 on lakers in that area over 2 hours. With 3 over 29 inch. Steve also missed what may have been the biggest laker we have ever hooked. It hammered the spin n glo and went for the bottom, I have never seen a rigger rod bend that far over. He grabbed the rod, and had it for about 6 seconds, before the hook pulled and all we were left with was some mouth skin.

Keith, do you bounce bottom with the spin& glows? I run cowbells with peanut wobblers and do pretty well on the lakers but it seems like I have to bounce the balls on the bottom with the rigs about 15' back to be effective. It's a little risky so I'd like to try running them higher. Was wondering if you do?

Great job Keith!
I lost a big laker recently, so I’m feeling the pain too! Next time it will be bigger!
Good luck in the derby!
