Hudson river stripers

Post by Riverrunt »

Getting my boat ready for the stripers coming up the river soon, as soon as the water temp hits 50 degrees, i will be on the water looking for herring.
Sad news, i have herd from a guy running
A bait shop this. Could be the last year for striper fishing on the hudson.
The slot limit they imposed on the season
Has killed way more stripers than if they
Left the regs.alone. last year they found
Way more belly up fish dead, from being caught, and out of the water far to long
Before being returned to the river.

I believe it. If the fish is clearly not a keeper
They should release it in the water next to the boat , not even take it out of the water

So many guys have to hold them up and take pictures of every one they catch
Then the other guy wants his picture taken
With the same fish. And the fish is already
Stressed out from the long fight.
They can't handle it.

Very good point, fish swimming hundreds of miles to spawn are stressed enough as it is. Good sportsman care for the quarry they chase and treat them accordingly.

Water temperature almost hit 42 degrees
Yesterday.
Last year the herring showed up down in Catskill on April 1. With water temperature's
In the low 40's.
Won't be long , hopefully the weather doesn't do anything to screw it up.
