Port Douglas Aug 27

Post by Gecha (Gerry) »

David and I left Montreal at 5:45 am and launched from Port Douglas around 8. There was already about 10 trailers in the partking lot.
We trolled for salmon for about 1 hour in the bay by the launch, but not hit, so decided to go for lakers close to Schuyler Island.
With 2 riggers bouncing bottom between 55 and 90 fow, one with a Sutton 44, the other with a medium blue home made light spoon. We got 2 yellow perch within a few minutes, released them, then a 3lb laker 1/2 hour later. Then nothing for a while, so we moved to Schuyler Reef, where 5 others boats were trying their luck.
On one rigger, we put a 5' horizontal blad on the ball, using a Sutton 44 about 3 feet higher and 8' behind. The other rigger had a small 2' blade on the ball, and the same home made blue spoon 3' higher and 6' back.
We roasted under the sun part of the afternoon, marking a lot of baitfish, ending up with 4 lakers in the box, and releasing 2 others.

When we returned to the ramp around 4 PM, the parking lot was fairly crowded, some pulling their boat out before the arrival of Irene, others launching for a late afternoon break.
Unfortunately there was one hour long wait line crossing the border, as many Canadians were returning home that weekend.

It turned out to be a wonderful day on the water. It was a HOT and sunny day, and the lake was very calm.

Looking forward to do it again soon.....

Nice report Gerry and glad that you manage to put fish in the box.

Next time try to keep you're lures on the bottom; put the clip just at the ball, lure 10ft behind.

Thanks for the great detail Gerry! Like to hear reports out of Port Douglas. What a protected ramp to launch from and fish.

Thanks for the report.
I spent some time on Reelax in that area a week or so ago...we ended up with cisco's and big perch. Glad you put some fish in the cooler!
Catch and serve with lemon.
