Good thing the food was good!

Post by ReelInvestment »

Well, the alarm went off at 4:15 this morning and I was up and out the door to a super crisp clear morning. After firing up the dodge and scrapping the frost off my windshield I was headed north. Quick stop to pick up buddy George and we were hot to trot for point bay. Launched, parked, and on the water by 6:45. We headed south and set for salmon. With the surface temp only 58 we decided to keep gear high. Outside riggers with 35’ leads down 10 and 15. Inside riggers short leads 21 and 27 feet down with sliders. We trolled, and trolled and trolled, switched spoons and trolled. Shivered wondering why we didn’t bring the heater and trolled some more. South to diamond, across to ny and north all the way above Essex, back across to vt, back to Essex trying for lakers and NOTHING! Finally we had a rod wiggle....8” smallmouth on a laker set up. Not long after, our suspended rod wiggles. Perch....This ones going on the grill! Surf and turf! Then a while later another smallmouth off the bottom on a spin n glow. Good thing I brought lots of food. We grilled marinated venison back strap, homemade chicken wings and the perch. As we were finishing our last chicken wings we notice our outside rod was doing something funny. I popped it out and started reeling. Nothing huge I tell George, still wondering what the hell ive got. Well it ended up being my longest catch yet. Coming in at 9ft from reel to tip I landed a spin rod with an okuma reel, plastic still over the cork handle! Once all the food was gone the fish still weren’t biting. With no more appetite or food we decided to pack it in for the day. 8 hours on the water with not even 2 pounds worth of fish to show for it. I can’t believe we never even found a laker to play with. All in all WAY better than hanging out on the couch or work. ReelInvestment will be back in October, hopefully the fishing gets better!

Now that is a grill full! Looks sooooo tasty... I know a guy who swears that not removing the plastic over the cork makes it a lucky rod. I wonder if this is something that Crazy Ivan dropped over board.. :?: . really would love to see a pic of the rod you caught... that is a cool story...

Thanks for sharing.

I meant to take a picture of it too. It’s not a trolling set up, it had some crazy foam bobber on it. We are thinking it was standing straight up and down, or just floating suspended over deep water. We believe we hooked it with the cable on the drop.

The main purpose of going fishing is to catch fish, catching anything else is a bonus
Nice BBQ setup.
