Fishing rods need guides replaced

Post by chilidog »

I've got 3 downrigger rods each missing a guide. Is there anyone local that can replace the guides?
Thanks!

I replaced guides on several of my rods, it's not really difficult to do.
YouTube has plenty of videos to guide you thru the process...
The hardest part is finding thread to match the rest of it on your rod.
You may have to match as closely as possible and live with the minor color differences...

I need to replace a couple eyes on downrigger and spinning rods.
Anyone know where I can order guides?

Thanks Mudchuck, I've built rods in the past however I don't have a jig or the materials anymore. I found a guy in Waterbury that will do it.
Dratchma, you can order rod building supplies/guides at https://www.mudhole.com/

Easy to replace guides.
I custom built a walleye rod last year, getting all my parts from mudhole. Great service and quality parts.

I've wrapped and built many rods. Mudhole is a good source for the proper guide and thread. Some threads are colorfast, and others aren't. A simple jig can be made from a notched cardboard box, and thread tension can be achieved by passing the thread through a book on the floor. As others have said, it isn't difficult. If you are patient, you can rotate the thread finish by hand without any motor and it won't sag. When I travel I carry a 35mm film cannister with several differently sized guides and tip tops, thread, epoxy and rod tip glue, in case of emergency.
