Towing vehicle question

Need to replace my old truck, wondering if anyone has any experience towing with the Ford Escape? One of the models has 3500 lb towing capacity, however it's a fairly small SUV. Guessing they can boost up the torque, etc. on the engine to do what you need for towing, and I don't tow far. Wondering also about braking with it being a smaller SUV. Looking to go the SUV route instead of the truck route this time around.

19' aluminum, figure 2500 lbs with boat/motor/trailer, no trailer brakes, single axle. Weight is fine per specs on the Escape, just wondering if anyone has real world experience with it.

I used to tow my old boat 17' aluminum 2 outboards single axle trailer with my grand Cherokee no issues.
I would think your ok.
