Samon Hole trapping 9/15
A friend and I went down this morning in the rain to fish the Salmon Hole...no luck besides a few small bass and suckers, although I did catch a little Brown. About 3 hours after being there, and having all the SM's steal our crawlers, and me losing my 3 Powerbait worms I had left on snags, we decided to move from the point closer to the falls. On our way up a fellow angler was coming to the point and told us they'd started trapping, so we decided to head up and check things out. Got there, SALMON GALORE! Tons of Salmon in the trap, and we watched as they measured weighed and tagged the first Salmon, a female well over 5 LBS. We stayed about 5 minutes, checking them out in the trap as they poked their noses out of the water looking for ways to escape. Every once in a while we'd catch a glimpse of a big ol' kiped out Male, probably close to 7-8 LBs. They appeared to have trapped at least 30 Salmon from the looks of things, I'm not sure how many they got for the day...but another friend of mine and I will be back down first thing in the morning Amazing that they've already trapped that amount of Salmon, whereas in the years before they hadn't even trapped more than 40 Salmon for an entire YEAR! Report should be coming soon! Things will be heating up this weekend, I saw a few new faces down there the past few weeks, word must be spreading....

I blame the trapping for the lack of my success today.....Dockside wrote:September 15th right on time.......

Good report Matt; It's good to hear the report is up this year from last year! They really had a high count this spring also. I walked down a few times this spring and they were taging every steelhead/Rainbow but not the salmon. Good luck tomorrow!

Matt,
Where was your camera at the fish trap? If you get a chance next time they are lifting it again snaps some photos for us here.
Thanks!

I had my phone in a baggy in my pocket, it was raining pretty good so I was scared to take it out of the bag. I'll get some footage tomorrow if they're trapping.Digitroll (Ron) wrote:Matt,

Great news!!
Sounds like sweet success for the salmon this year.
What kind of data do they gather?

That's cool information Matt! I didn't realize that was going on. I had heard of the trapping etc but a live report with numbers adds to the project for sure. Thanks!

Looked like they were tagging all of them, taking measurements, weight, sexing, then letting them go. From the looks of some of the fish they had...I really didn't see many lamprey marks.JK47 wrote:Great news!!

Re: Samon Hole trapping 9/15
Need to make a correction on this, I checked my records from last year and it was in ''October" when I was seeing them tagging! My apologies.dreamcatcher wrote:Good report Matt; It's good to hear the report is up this year from last year! They really had a high count this spring also.
