NATURE'S WAY

Post by tamiron »

Nature’s way? All forage for larger predators have dark tops and white bottoms…. That’s nature’s way! When predators are beneath forage, they cannot see the forage if the sky is light and bright. Also if the predators are above the fish looking down into deep water they won’t see the forage as clearly because of the dark tops. The next time you see a big pile of bait, with predators around it check their location… It may indicate whether they are active and feeding or just watching. If Lake Trout are feeding on juvenile salmon, then the salmon above them are easy pickings but salmon holding tight to the bottom would be difficult to see for the Lakers. Salmon that seemed to be found deep, maybe just using nature’s camouflage, and staying below the Lakers vision. Especially if the Lakers are being presented with alewives and smelt above them in the water column. Don’t always assume that those big marks down deep are always Lakers. On any given day, if all you are catching is lake trout try, to run something below them without touching bottom. Who knows you might just find a new trick./JIM

The last 2 winters something has changed.. we used to catch salmon on the top 40fow in winter and now it seems they are 75-100 feet down.

Your observations and summary seem right on Jim. Very interesting...

I am going to begin searching for salmon in places where lakers do not go. I have a hunch the change in species volumes may have changed the areas they frequent..

It will take work to get back to a heavy salmon bite, but I haven’t given up on trying to figure it out and change what we are doing to match the times may be the key...
