LAST OF THE SMELT AS PRIME FORAGE??

Post by tamiron »

WELL THAT TIME IS HERE AGAIN!

If the smelt aren't done spawning, they will be soon. IMO, the last week to take advantage of the #3 HONEYBEEs or large stick baits for salmon high in the water column, will occur within the next 10 days. After that the smelt will return to the COLD water that they spend most of their lives in. But they have left their legacy behind as this years smelt fry will become a favorite forage high in the water column during mid to late July. Starting very soon however, the Alewives will become the top of the water column preferred forage as they begin their spawning cycle. #2 and #4 Honeybees now get a nod. After that the #1 & #6 imitating this years fry of both alewives and smelt will have their turn high in the water column August through....

If the water warms too quickly, alewives invading shallow water will often feast on fry of the year of both smelt and perch (messing with year spawning results of both)!! But the salmon will find them as easy pickings and extremely preferred.

If you check out the size chart, the paragraph above might make more sense!
