GPS tablet install (Samsung Galaxy 8")

Post by digitroll (ron) »

This was a long time coming (6.5 seasons since rigging my 2013 Fishmaster) due to the space requirements and desiring nothing blocking my view straight ahead for the driver. I tried a standard size I-Pad that was my son's when he upgraded to the big I-pad a year ago and just didn't like the weight of it and it's size and no place to mount it.

This Samsung Galaxy 8" 2018 version is light and fits the bill. I ordered off Amazon a flexible arm to hold it that screws by bracket into the side. So I can now go full screen on my HDS-7 Lowrance for sonar.

The last photo is where my probe and weight was located 10 days ago and recovered off Split Rock:

Great setup Ron.
I also use my iPad as GPS when I am on water.
Only issue I found screen is hard to see on very bright days.

I have an ipad and would like to install this as well. What exactly is involved?

Just a bolt on mount and the Navionics app (no need for the tablet version of the app, the mobile one works fine). An enclosure or bimini top is basically necessary on sunny days so you can see the screen. Marine units are much brighter than tablets.

Tablet and mobile app are the same price. $15 a year. Annual subscription.

Ah, cool, the "HD" version used to be $50.

Yup.. And the HD SD card for your Sonar was $200.

Here is the view for the drivers side with no obstruction over the gauge pod to drive the boat looking straight ahead. That was my goal. I like the fan to the right. :)

Your iPad must have the cellular option to work. This option includes the GPS module.
The non-cellular iPad cannot capture the GPS satellites, therefore the Navionics app would not work.

It needs the cellular capability, yes. But you don't need active cellular service on it.

It would be just as nice to use a light 8" tablet with wireless Blue Tooth to receive the sonar signal as well instead of big heavy bulky Sonar/GPS units we pay so much for. You wouldn't need the heavy duty Ram mounts we pay a lot for to hold the tablets either. LOL

A FAN!!!! OMG that is a friggen brilliant idea that has never even on the worst days crossed my mind. I love my ipad for sonar, though I dont have a mount for it, it fits perfect in the middle of my steering wheel which is not used at all since I steer with the Minn Kota.

I added this fan a few years ago for those days that are dead calm and just plain hot no matter what you do. This fan I found on Amazon and it moves a big volume of air on low and high speeds. Safe with plastic blades so one cannot be hurt reaching into the moving blades by accident and no need for a blade guard. Many of the small 12 volt fans just don't move a decent amount of air out there. This fan is awesome!
