Water temp for salmon

Post by tmcaul »

We fished Sunday from Essex through Whallons Bay to Split Rock. A few lakers. Water temps were 45 -48. On the VT side of the lake the temps were closer to 55. We have a Fish Hawk, so these are temps down 25'. Haven't boated salmon on the NY side; pretty good luck on VT side. Is it because temps are 5 degrees warmer on the VT side?

I think salmon prefer 55 degree water if there is bait available. Am I right on this?

I've always believed in salmon preferring oxygenated water, near 55° as a priority, then bait. But on the flip side, they will leave their preferred water temp to chase bait!
Catch and serve with lemon.

Interesting, very interesting information. I excuse my ignorance, but would that put the NY river in a later run than in VT?
