116 Million Walleyes in Lake Erie

The walleye population estimate for 2020 was 116 million, the most since 2005.
“Now, with 2019 coming in next year as 2-year-olds in 2021, the first look estimate has it at 151 million, by far the highest we’ve ever seen in the lake,” he said. “It’s going to be up for quite some time.”

we did a two day charter out of port clinton last june, we had our limit in an hour and a half the first day and it took two and a half hours the second day.definetly not the most exciting fish to catch,but definetly one of the best tasting!!!!

Off the top of my head I believe it is smelt/alewives. I though I remember reading about Erie experiencing more die offs of alewives than the other Great Lakes due to more ice coverage in winter....so the smelt still had a foot hold. This was something I heard back when alewives were first discovered in Champlain so it may be different now.
I also hear that Erie has a good yellow population so that may be part of the forage base.

On another forum I posed the question "What makes Lake Erie such a great walleye fishery?" Many responses but most were anecdotal. Some went back as far as the cleanup of the lake. Walleyes historically spawned in the lake's tributaries, but forum responses indicated they now spawn in the lake itself.
So with regard to Lake Champlain:
Do walleyes spawn in the lake?
What caused the large downturn of the population in the late 80s or early 90s?
