Salmon in the river in July?

Post by Mr.Spoon »

Hi. My names Luke, and im brand new to this forum. I don't generally fish Lake Champlain and its tributaries, although I do fish Lewis Creek from time to time in March/April. I live in NH, and fish a good amount in the NEK. On the 12th(2 days ago), after some brookie fishing in the back country, I decided to check out a very well known tributary to Memphremagog, and to do some bass fishing and see how the rivers changed since last season. I poked around for a bit, played with some bass, and was having a grand old time. I crossed over to where a tiny, ice cold stream dumps into the mainstem, and low and behold, a dead salmon was washed up on shore, and two live ones were swirling around in the pool. I immediatly stopped fishing, since the water was pretty borderline for salmon. Why are they in this time of year? I generally dont see them there until august 20ish. Any theories as to why this pod of fish showed up 2-3 months early? Attatched below are a few pictures of the deceased fish, it was a 16.5 incher, and had an adipose and left vent clip, which I believes makes it stocked in spring 2019. I also have a video of the live ones, but it turned out pretty crappy, although you can see one of them. Also enjoy some pics of some beautiful trout I caught earlier in the day.
Thanks.

I suspect the heavy rain may have fooled them into going up river... They love current and after the recent hot dry weather, and recent rain may have made the go for the fresh flow of water and head up stream.... they could be fooled into thinking it’s August due to the water temps that are so cool compared to lake..

Great story and very interesting info.. thanks for sharing

Welcome aboard...!
