My first trip out on Champlain this year and I didn't have my hopes up very high. Most reports I've heard haven't been very promising, plus it was one of those sunny bluebird days that very often will shut the bite down. Well, I won't catch any fish sitting on the couch so I went out to try my luck. Got set up and after about 45 minutes got my first fish, a nice fat 11 inch yellow. Before I could rebait my hook another flag goes off and I ice a healthy 30 inch northern. Nice!!! Nothing for another hour or so and then I get another flag. I knew it was a big fish right away and I took my time with it. It almost didn't fit through the hole but BAM, here she is, a beautiful 37 inch northern, my personal best!!! I only wish someone else had been around to take my picture with it, but oh well, I'm not complaining. Got one other 24 incher to end the day. Not too shabby considering I didn't even get on the ice until 1:00. In case anyone is wondering I landed that beast on 8 lb test mono, no steel leader, a #10 hook and a fathead minnow I got from George Leclaire in Hinesburg. Fun afternoon!!!
