Salmon fishing since the LCI derby

July I was out of the action for a down trailer. My observations of others who have been out and my two trips in early August seem to beg the question "Where are the 23" plus salmon"? 5 lb plus fish?

There has been a lot of people trying from Westport to Valcour and the Sea.
Maybe a blip on the radar and there somewhere. It will be interesting what the trib. results or counts will be at the end of October to compare data at places where the fish are counted.

Good question Ron.
A quick look and I see only two salmon entered into the Vermont Master Angler Program for July and none for the month of August.
As for the LCI All Season, only one salmon was entered for July. I don't expect to see the August results for a few more days or so.

Ron,

I just spoke with a guy that fish quite a lot and this summer it's one of the worst for him. He mentionne that last year was incredible with numbers and size but this year it's very bad. Since Irene it's even worst.
From my camp I look at the water and it's coffe color.

For myself, the last few trips I done were not productive and I cover more water then I ever done.

Hope the best is to come.

Got a hunch and kingfisher and I are gonna try it tomorrow... If it works, we will have salmon on from new waters.... We shall see... I know if it weren't for the LCI week, I wouldn't have boated any big fish this year...! (I should say Theresa wouldn't have boated)

When the bite was on in the beginning of the season, you're right, most fish seemed to be 20-25" fish and fat. (Except in the IS, where they were always18+ and lean) Since then, not too many. My most promising mid-summer spots have been by the the Stone House near Diamond Island and Westport south past Barber. Some big thump-thump 'n' gone around Barber. I've assumed I'm washing lures all around those honkers, just can't seem to make 'em take the bait. With a muddy VT side of champlain, I'd go looking for some NY salmon. I'll continue to try, but am looking forward to November 8-)

That is sort of misleading.
I would hate to see fisherman discouraged from fishing the Sea.
I agree that it seems the Inland Sea gives up more smaller fish than other areas, but it holds plenty of big fish. I couldn't begin to try and count the many 4 pounds and bigger fish I've caught there, the countless big thumps & gone, Big sliver wave of "see-ya!", broken lines, etc...
The State Record Landlocked comes from the Inland Sea.
The big steel-head on the 2011 fishing/hunting digest cover comes from the Inland Sea.
Mrs. Reelax has a monster Brown on her living room wall that came from the Sea.
There are plenty more examples of fine fish taken in the inland sea.
There are BIG fish that reside in the Sea!

My best from the sea this year, not a monster, but very a respectable Landlocked. May 22, 2011:

Oops...called out!

I was generalizing average sizes with consistent #'s. Yes, plenty of BIG fish in the sea.
