NOAA Wind Reports

Post by Black Ghost (Ken) »

Does anyone know if the NOAA wind reports will continue for Colchester Reef and Diamond Island? The last report seems to be 12/5. It sure would make decisions to go out on the lake , or not, easier.

Strange...Diamond Island was just repaired about the third week of October.
http://www.lakechamplainunited.com/foru ... ?f=2&t=522

And now it appears all three stations are down. Coincidence? Or were they shut down on purpose? Lack of interest this time of year? Budget cuts? It would be nice to know.
Don't forget, the current marine data from Diamond Island, Colchester Reef, and Burton sites are current and past data. The NOAA site is still "forecasting" and the wind/wave forecast model is still working.
NOAA manages their Champlain Recreational Forecast thru the end of December, so it's nearly at it's yearly cycle and will begin forecasting Mountain/skiing conditions soon.

There are a few other sites where wind information can be gotten:
I think Salmoneye uses this: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/fin ... ct=WEATHER
Others: http://www.windfinder.com/weatherforeca ... _champlain

Yup...

I use Weather Underground for actual real time wind readings...

There is one on Arnold's Bay, and I find most of the time that Windy Valley in New Haven gives the most 'lake like' wind readings...

I wonder if Diamond and Colchester being down has to do with someone being on vacation, and not rebooting a computer...

Popster knows who to contact, so maybe he will happen by...

Thanks for the wind site references. Hopefully more private weather station data will become available on the web.

As for Burton Island, I assume they turn off the server when they close the park for the season seems like about the right date.

Guys

All the folks are well aware of the situation. Diamond & Colchester should be up & running very soon. Seems a server/NOAA issue that hopefully is corrected in a day or 2. Electronic hooples at work. Nothing to do with vacations, Paul.

Burton's issue is a bit more involved, being that it's data gets sent via cell as opposed to UHF radio. Burton WX station has nothing to do with the State Park or its season.
Will keep all informed.
Holiday greetings

Thanks for the update...

I knew you'd know the skinny...

You must realize my 'reboot' comment was a joke?

Hi Randy,

We get the Colchester Reef and Diamond Island data via the Vermont Monitoring Cooperative through the University of Vermont, and it seems that the data has been unavailable on their end since December 5th. Not sure what the issue is down there, but we'll contact them and see what's up.

Hi,

I'm wondering what happened to the Diamond Island recording station. A number of us fish from boats until the water freezes and even then we may break ice to get out.
While your lake forecasts stop at the end of December we may fish this year all year or way into February. The water temp this weekend was 47 degrees to 60 feet in the Fishing channel from Westport to Thompson's Point. My home water. The Diamond Island report view before leaving home is valuable to see where to launch safely. I missed it when the Ospreys knocked it offline and the water temp is a good indicator to see the lake slosh around.

Thank You, Frostbite Fleet, Randy Colomb w

Back up. Randy's note worked.

40 mph south winds and 7 footers forecast for Thursday.
