Boating rules
Sail boat vs us
Re: Boating rules
I'll share my story of a Canadien powerboat cruising into my trolling rigs to ask how to get to "Virgins." I had down riggers out but he was fully on my port side inside the lines, with a cute and topless female mate. We finally established that he wanted to get to Vergennes and was looking for Otter Creek, but he had no charts. I hooked up as he pulled away, but was left as Stand-On.

Re: Boating rules
So based on that diagram, the sail boat must give way when overtaking a fishing boat?
Re: Boating rules
To heck with cormorants lets exterminate blowboats !
Re: Boating rules
Had one hit one of my planer boards earlier this year.
They were not paying attention.
Had to use my horn to get them to look.
Too close for comfort.

Re: Boating rules
The other day I had that sail boat coming behind me, pass me on the starboard side and suddently turn in front of me and I had to turn port side and I was so close I could let my little voice SCREAM at him!
Re: Boating rules
Sorry Andre, but I've been using my own French term this year, Cocksuckier. I screamed it at sailboat 10 feet off my bow the other day as they made an unexpected move, and my boat had to turn 90 ° to keep from hitting them. Sorry Matt for the foul stuff, but maybe when they have the wife and kids within hearing range, they will turn off. Oh, by the way, this a- hole had his sails down.

It's not just sailboats. The big cruisers also feel they rule the roost out there.

WHEN THEY ARE OVER TAKING YOU FROM THE STERN YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY 45 DEGREES OF STERN I BELIEVE IS THE ANGLE OTHER WISE YOU HAVE TO GIVE WAY FOR THEM. BUT THEY ABUSE THIS RULE ALL THE TIME.

Re: Boating rules
Exactly, the rules don't matter when 75% of recreational boaters don't follow them. Assume everyone out there is actively trying to hit you and stay the hell away from them.Captain Paul wrote:BUT ONE OTHER RULE OF THE ROAD THAT IS ALWAYS OVER LOOKED IS ( AVOID ALL DANGERS AT ALL TIMES)

Re: Boating rules
I have had a couple of close encounters with a couple of sailboats and powerboats this year. I don’t understand why they think they need to get so close. Bad language doesn’t seem to chase them away either.
