NH archery season 9/15 - 12/15

Post by The River Rat »

Gotta love an early season hunt! As I'm sitting here watching the leaves fall from a stand before I head to the job, I figured I'd share a little to kick off this years hunting season. NH offers one of the earliest deer seasons in the northeast. Its archery season runs straight thru from Sept. 15th thru Dec. 15, can't beat that. It's been a crazy year for all I'm sure, so a little alone time in the woods can really give a bit of sanity back! That being said I'll keep this short. My first sit, thr first morning I was lucky enough to have 2 bucks come by me, both under 10 yards. The first was a nice young spike that I let walk thru as I could see his buddy behind him was a touch larger. Shot him at 6 yards, and after a 50 yard down hill track, with zero blood! I was attaching my first tag of the season to 130# odd ball! Ended up my buddy I was hunting with shot the other buck an hour later half a mile away.

Recap on my NH adventures. Weds Sept 30th, poor mans holiday for me(That's rain out for some of us in construction)! I love it. Tough bow hunting in it, really have to choose your shots wisely. I set out to an area in the Connecticut river valley and get to good grounds around 6:30 just as the weather subsides from torrential to tolerable. Head straight for some buck sign I found the day prior and in route realize the wind isnt going to cooperate with my set up. Plan B requires crossing a brook to get to an elevated, overgrown cut which is now flooded do to the 1.5"s of rain overnight, booo. Still hunt my way up stream and find several beds along the brook, it's been dry lately, no surprise. Find a shallow enough crossing, which also happened to be a deer trail with 1 medium fresh track headed in. Another few feet and a couple decent hookings before the bank shoots up almost vertical 40 yrds. Sneak n peak up over top, nodda. Another 50 yrds or so I happen to look over the edge down at the brook and bingo, theres a deer 5' from the edge in bedded in some golden rods liking itself and it has bone! Now on my knees I'm adjusting for a shot under limbs from trees on the bank, he stands, shakes off and just then the wind switches, rite at him. He perks up and looks rite in my direction, oh boy. He shows he cant really see me and I put my elbow behind my bow and draw, level off, and release.... smack!!! Looks good, mabye a touch low, he bolts 15 yrds, stops behind some brush then bolts out. On the outgoing before he went outta site, I could see the tell tale wobbles... yes! Another arrow knocked I decide that being above him and with the r as in I could easy ahead and try to get eyes on him. I get ahead about 40 yrds approach the edge and peak over, and there he is, upside down lifeless. Quick n clean, heart shot. So I decided to retrieve my arrow and find it there in his bed. As I pick it up I look across the brook and there at 15 yrds is a tree I was just standing by looking for a way across! With the wind rite and quite conditions I had slipped rite by him and we never saw each other! Great hunt. Good luck all VT archery opener today, yes I'm in a stand writing this!!!

Figured I'd close out this post with the results of the rest of my year in the deer woods throughout NH, VT and Massachusetts
