Youth weekend success!
Youth weekend success!
My daughter, Autumn, successfully completed hunter safety this year. We got her a license and new youth model deer rifle to hunt with. Saturday morning we set out and built a nice ground blind for two in an area where we have been seeing deer regularly.
We slipped into the blind at 3:30pm on Saturday and got situated for the afternoon. We sat and shared beef jerky and trail mix as the time passed. After about an hour and a half Autumn asked me how much longer we should stay to which I answered "sweetie, the best time to see deer is just before sunset. Today the sunset is at 5:41, so if you can hold on for another half hour we may get lucky."
She answered "no problem Dad, I can definitely sit another half hour"
Maybe two minutes later I look up into the corner of the meadow and spot a deer, my heart starts pounding so I take a deep breath and look over at Autumn.
"Honey, there is a deer over there in the field, just came out and it does not even know we are here"
"Oh my God Dad!" she whispers
I helped her get into a good shooting position and held the shooting stick steady for her while she lined up the shot. She took her time, clicked off the safety and let drive.
The rifle barked and the deer rolled over onto its side, tried to get up and rolled back over and expired.
She made a perfect shot, right in the ol' boiler room.
We hugged and high fived for a few minutes before we packed up and went over to field dress the deer.
I handed her my cell phone and said "You better call your mother and let her know you got one".
We live just a few minutes down the road from where we were hunting and it only took that long for my wife and two boys to arrive and head up to find us.
The deer was a doe but yet she had some odd little horns. It weighed in at 153 pounds, a nice heavy doe!
Nonetheless it was a great hunt and what a great way for Autumn to kick off her hunting career

An awesome success story. She won't soon forget her first deer. I'm betting you won't have to beg her to go again !

Yessir, one lucky young lady. She is 10 years old! I didn't shoot my first deer until I was 19
