Re: Lakers and salmon Westport area

Depending on time of year and temps you can stay inside the bay and often do well. A 20 or so minute run gets you North to Split Rock area/ whallonsbay. Both produce a lot of fish. And you often times find a big difference in temperature from main lake into Whallons Bay. Vermont side is also product...

Re: Atlantic fishing February 23

I was in Florida for a few weeks and an old friend invited me on the charter. His son and grandson were visiting from up here and he brought a fellow who works for him. We were to go on. Tuesday we headed out for the full day charter. Got a call from Captain urging us to wait until Wednesday due to ...

NY boating license

I just completed the required boating course for license needed in NY by 2025. Having been operating boats for more than 50 years and having been. NY licensed fishing guide running a 24 ft charter boat on Lake George I was not too happy about having to get a license. Called NY Parks and Recreation m...

Re: FLEAS

I was out Wednesday as well and spoke to Hitman at the launch. Saw him fishing later and spoke again when we were back at launch. Fleas were bad from Diamond Island to Whallons Bay. Had a strike near Mother’s Rock. No fish. Gave up on trolling headed north and jigged a nice laker only after a couple...

Westport lakers

Got out Monday morning for a couple of hours. Picked up 3 lakers, two of which hit hard by lampreys.
Water temps around 48 at surface and same 20-30 ft down. Sausage gravy spoon took two. The other on a purplish/ yellow with spots from Jimmer in Moriah.

Re: 40 miles out in Atlantic

Thanks for the responses. A day I will never forget. My share of the snapper I took to Gulf coast. The next day I found the Margarita Grill in Homosassa where they will cook your catch. Red snapper are great eating.

40 miles out in Atlantic

I had what I considered the trip of a lifetime the third week of February. A longtime friend hired a charter boat for five of us. My friend, his son, grandson, a fellow who has worked for him and myself. Left out of Ponce Inlet, Fl at 6 am, still dark. Wasn’t long before we were treated with sunrise...

Wednesday Westport and north

Nice morning, near flat water. Tried jigging lakers not far from launch. Not much going on so headed to flats south of Charlotte ferry. Not much there either. Two others fishing nearby swung over. They caught a couple across from Split Rock, but nothing where we were. They headed north, I went south...

Re: Westport and north and docking boat at launch

I’ve noticed the same with guys fishing. Pull in off to side, do what needs to be done out of the way. Launch the boat, park and move out. Also had fisherman offering help whether needed or not. It’s quite obvious, fellows who fish are just great people.

Re: Westport and north and docking boat at launch

A few years back I was launching boat out of Willsboro. Boat was 3/4 in water as I’m backing it in with a F-150 pickup. I look back to see a sailboater drive his dingy right behind me to tie up. Hey what’s going on, I’m launching my boat. Oh, I didn’t see you. Really? Full-size truck with 16 ft boat...

Westport and north and docking boat at launch

On the water about 7:30 with a friend along. Ran out from launch about 1/2 mile and stopped to jig lakers. Had a couple of hits when my friend says Got one. Put up a good fight, told buddy to let fish stay down 10-12 feet until you see bubbles. Fish blew out bubbles and we brought in a 10 pound lake...

Re: Boat Fishing Etiquette

I was also stopped by Coast Guard. I was told just to keep fishing but they needed to board boat. No, I have 4 lines out on Downriggers, I can’t fish and have you board as well. They had to wait until I took in lines. No problems, they were polite, had trainees with them. Much easier to deal with th...

Re: Boat Fishing Etiquette

I’ve run into the problem at various times. Mostly sailboats who seem to think if you’re fishing you have move for them or don’t see a problem with cutting in front of you 20 feet away. Had it happen. Also had large pleasure boats get far too close considering how large Champlain is. I chartered 3 y...
