Re: Round Gobies
In response to "finsntins" comments, here's an article I wrote on why having round goby in Lake Champlain would be very bad for the lake ecologically, as well as bad for anglers. Invasive species always impact the health of the lake, even if there are small, isolated examples of something ...

Re: VTFWD Fishing Reports
Very interesting pictures of the one-eyed lake trout! Fish can certainly take their licks and keep on ticking. In this case, I'd guess that lake trout had a damaged eye at a young age/small size. Lots of things can cause this. I've seen eyes pop from mis-handling in the boat, a hook in the eye, a pr...

VTFWD Fishing Reports
Hey Everyone: You may or not not have seen the "Vermont Fishing Report" blog I wrote last year from April through October, as part of my job as a Fisheries Biologist with VT Fish & Wildlife. It’s a bi-weekly statewide report on fishing conditions. What's biting, what to target and how,...

Re: fleas
So according to one report of the SWF affects on Harp Lake in Ontario: "Harp Lake in Ontario was found to have eight different species of fish in 1980 when the spiny water flea was first discovered there. The number of native fish steadily dropped down to two species in 2000." Does anyone...

Re: fleas
Guys, we should be careful of the "sky is falling" mentality. What you read on the internet and what the reality will be can be two very different things. Yes it's true, spiny waterflea tails and barbs are not digestible by most fish species, but the bodies are. They can pass the spines, o...

I have personally met and know many members here, and I have fished with a number of them. However, many people here also know me professionally as a fisheries biolog...

Re: Giant Manitoba Pike
I always laugh when I see this series of pike photos rise up yet again, for the 1,000th time in the 8 years that have passed since that big pike was caught in Holland. Yes, Holland. Read on, and be sure to click the link to the European Fishing Magazine below: First, let's all acknowledge the majest...

Re: Official VT Fish & Wildlife Position On The Alabama Rig
So if you have a number of attractors, spinners, blades or whatever and only two hooks, it is legal? Is that what you are saying? Yes Walt, that is correct. The Alabama Rig, or any other such "umbrella rig" can be fished, as long as you only run two "lures" from it (the definiti...

Re: NO perch yesterday
Raz - where any ciscos over 13-inches? If so, you should enter them into the Master Angler program, if you got pictures of them. You'll be the first with that species! So far, out of the 33 species that are eligible, only 4 remain with no entries - American eel, American shad, lake whitefish, and ci...
