Re: First Kayak Trip of 2020
Thanks for saving the kid's life. I'll (reluctantly) get on my soapbox re: coldwater kayaking safety - privilege of being old and opinionated :). Step one is using a boat that accepts a skirt and can be rolled. Most of what people call kayaks these days are box store bathtubs that can't take a skirt...

Re: First Kayak Trip of 2020
Unsolicited opinion on wet suits and need for same. I still occasionally use a shorty farmer john, but only as a base layer under a drytop. Dry suits are ungodly expensive, but dry tops (or semi-dry tops) can be found at near-reasonable prices if you're patient. Dry tops are much more comfortable an...

Took my fishing rod for a boat ride.
Small salmon near Essex NY on Saturday. Modest size, but feisty and 1st one since 2016. It was still alive post-photograph, so I was able to revive and release it. Trolling platform is a bit cramped, lacks a porta potty, and never planes, but I just ran the Grand Canyon with it in late March-early A...

Re: SUNY Plattsburgh Instrumented Lake Buoys Update
Similar, but the St. Albans buoy is much larger with more/different instrumentation. No SUNY buoys in the Inland Sea. The one you mention is probably part of Middlebury College array funded by EPSCOR. See May 26 post by "popster" for details. Also check out National Buoy Data Center page f...

SUNY Plattsburgh Instrumented Lake Buoys Update
Thanks to "Popster" for the June 7 post re: Valcour Bouy. Additional/new details are below. Also, many thanks to the 27 folks that completed a survey of buoy data use by anglers this spring. I'll figure out a way to post a summary of the survey results later this month. Two SUNY Plattsburg...

Re: 5/18 shelburne
I'm thinking trout-perch, but would need a better photo (including view of dorsal) to be positive. Pretty common in Lake Champlain. Usually 3-4 inches, maximum is 6 inches. Looks like a cross between a perch (spiny ray fins) and a trout (adipose fin). See p.239 in Fishes of Vermont, or go to fishbas...

Survey Reminder - Use of SUNY Plattsburgh Data Buoy
Thank you to all who responded to my March 13 post. As a gentle reminder to those who have not already completed the survey..........Lake Champlain Sea Grant is seeking some feedback on the value of the SUNY data buoy that has been deployed near Valcour Island in recent years. The canvass is pretty ...

Survey - Use of SUNY Plattsburgh Data Buoy
Lake Champlain Sea Grant is seeking some feedback on the value of the SUNY data buoy that has been deployed near Valcour Island in recent years. While you are waiting for the lake to thaw, please consider completing our survey. The canvass is pretty short - shouldn't take more than a few minutes of ...

SUNY Plattsburgh Temperature Buoy Deployed Again
Instrumented Lake Buoy Again Operational The SUNY Plattsburgh instrumented buoy is again deployed southeast of Valcour Island. More specifically, it may be found at about: 44 36.12, -73 23.58 or about 0.8 miles from (heading 96 degrees true) Garden Island Like the last two years, the buoy collects,...

Re: Finally!
Nice work. I paddled/trolled about 4 miles in Whallon Bay this morning (5/8), but no hits. I put 4 salmon in the kayak in May '16, but it's been scoreless trolling since then.

SUNY Plattsburgh Data Buoy Deployed May 24
The SUNY Plattsburgh instrumented buoy is again deployed southeast of Valcour Island and east of Garden Island. The exact coordinates are will be posted later. Like last year, the buoy collects, stores, and relays information on surface weather and lake water temperatures (from the surface to a dept...

Re: SUNY Plattsburgh Instrumented Buoy data now available
We don't have a date yet, but the Lake Champlain Research Institute folks are gearing up for the field season, so I would guess they'll try to deploy the buoy before June 1. Both the LCRI Director (Dr. Mihuc) and climate buoy principal investigator (Dr. Eric Leibenspeger) are winding down their teac...

Post-tournament bass dispersal research report available
Not exactly “new” news, but those interested in the fate of bass following live release tournaments might want to check out this link. http://www.uvm.edu/seagrant/sites/default/files/uploads/publication/lcbp_report_bass_study_2013_reduced_size.pdf It’s a rather lengthy and somewhat technical report ...

Re: SUNY Plattsburgh Instrumented Buoy data now available
Karl, I'll take a stab at your 1st question. Short answer is "maybe" depending upon the severity of the winter (i.e. how big are the ice slabs impacting it and how big are the waves pushing the ice floes?). In any case, it's not seen as a risk worth taking for research. There is probably n...
