I have used the iPhone app for several years when ice fishing, and while it is not dead accurate for that it has always been close enough to get the job done. I recently decided to drop the 49.99 on the iPad app to take on the boat as a chart. being 5x the price I expected a little more accuracy, but what I found was that it is really dangerous to use on the boat. We were fishing south of shelburne bay and the chart showed a hump that came up to around 35 ft. raised my riggers up to 31ft, and worked our way up the hump, then I noticed on my humminbird it was reading 32 then 30, at that point I was in a frenzy pulling up 2 dipsy's and 2 riggers one manual. by the time we got turned away from the hump and headed deeper we were reading 21ft on the humminbird. looking at the track on the ipad it says we never got shallower than 39ft, which means that the app is off in the gps spot by 17ft in the bad direction. After this I looked at other places on the lake and found other glaring errors, like the fact that the app is missing the island to the left as you enter inner mallets bay completely, and a couple of other things. It seems that it being that far off is a real problem and makes me regret the $50 i spent on the app. prior to the trip I was planning on getting the sonar phone system to set up, but now I am skeptical of using navionics for the chart at all.

Keith, part of your issue may be the lake level offset... Right now Lake is very low...

What is the default set at? I looked and could not find it, but the lake at BTV was at 94.7 or something on friday and average is like 95.? so i didnt think that was a major factor as I would assume it would be set to the average depth

If you start using the sonar phone and the app all the datas you are collecting will be sent to Navionics to improve the map. The datas Navionics use has been bought from a private source if I remember.
If you use the sonar phone on a lake without any data you will be able to creat a totally new map
