2018 "WINTER" WORKSHOP

Hello Anglers and Friends,
Here is what I know now. We will have only one this year and it will be on February 17,2018 at the Miller center on Gosse court from 2:00 - 6:00 pm. we will have some great engaging speakers and a great raffle to support Green Mountain Conservation Camp in sending our youth to camp to build the skills of stewardship to last a lifetime. As soon as I can confirm I will post an itinerary of guest speakers. I expect to see all your smiling faces there.

UPDATE;
Happy to announce that our guest speakers for the upcoming Feb 17 LCU Winter Seminar will include 2 familiar faces.

Brian Chipman, Fisheries Biologist from Vermont Fish & Wildlife Dept, will bring us up to date on the state of the Champlain Salmon & Trout fisheries.

Brad Young, Fisheries Biologist and Sea Lamprey Control Program Manager, US Fish & Wildlife Service.

In addition, we are hoping that someone from USFWS will be present to speak on Cormorants.

Till then get your frostbite on and fish on, Dean

Dean - Thanks. Baitfish inquiry?

BU plays Navy on the 17th, so I may not be able to make the workshop as I may be in Annapolis. However, Dean, thank you. These workshops are a hallmark of the Fleet, which remains informed, involved and effective.

I'd love to hear Brian speak to the current assessment of baitfish populations in the lake. I know that many think (i) the smelt population is down and that the alewife population is up and (ii) that cold, hard ice winters (like this one seems to be becoming) disfavor smelt as the whities proliferate.

What do the biologists think?

All the ones I've attended from the time we taped spoons and tied flies through now have been a great time to meet people, become informed about fishing, and fisheries planning and conservation on the lake. Thank you all who have been instrumental in setting these up.

Does one need to sign up for the workshop or simply show up?

It's the Robert Miller Community and Recreation Center, 130 Gosse Court, Burlington VT.

It's open to anyone, we do have people from Canada that come to join us. There is an entry fee, $5 I think, maybe $10? Someone else will give you an exact number on the fee. This gets you a raffle ticket, covers the cost of renting the room for the afternoon, pizza and water, and we donate funds to support kids at the Green Mountain Conservation Camp.

Hope to see you there.
