Tying leader to leadcore
I spent the last hour + trying to tie a leader to the new leadcore I installed on my reel.
I put 50 yards (5 colors) of lead core over 100 yards of 30# mono backing.
I cannot get the 10# fluocarbon leader to tie securely to the 18# leadcore.
I tried different knots but none of them seem strong enough.
I would like a small knot so it will go through the guides of the rod, as I would like to have 15-20' leader.
I know many of you are using leadcore. There must be a good knot that is suitable for what I need.
Thanks.
Gerry

Merci André.
That post has a good tip on tying a leader to the leadcore.
I will give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it turned out.

Gerry - that knot won't fail you. I've been using it for years on my core setups and the bonus is it's very easy to tie, even in rolling seas!

Re: Tying leader to leadcore
I had a hard time with that method as my eyes aren't what they used to be.
I remove a few inches of lead from the sheath and tie a loop. Then I tie the mono onto the loop with a simple improved clinch knot.
I've never had one fail.

Re: Tying leader to leadcore
we had a lengthy post on the old forum about leadcore setups. I use the old blood knot to connect the LC to a 20lb leader, usually run about 50ft, then to a swivel, and a 6-8ft 10lb flourocarbon leader. I have never had one of the blood knots fail, and they are nice and smooth through the guides and onto the reel. But I certainly would'nt want to try and tie it out on the water! I have to refer to a picture I printed out every time I do need to tie it............

Re: Tying leader to leadcore
I use a double Uni-knot for this, have to pinch out about 4 inches of lead to do it, but I have never had this knot fail. Works well for braid and mono to lead core....

I do the same as Raz on the 4 leadcores I have setup and never have had a failure either.

Re: Tying leader to leadcore
Good info above and good food for thought.
I forgot it was called the Willis knot... But it IS what I currently use for leadcore if I don't use the swivel as below.
For regular thin braided I sometimes use a double uni when I am not in a hurry. When on a boat and in a hurry I have looped the mono leader on my finger into a loose "trilene" knot and then run the braid through the loops and then coiled the mono into my palm- tighten the trilene knot and create a double loop palomar knot over the five trilene passes. But tests reveal this to be only 50% of mono strength.
However, IMHO the BEST method of leader to to braid and one I use for some lead-to-mono or fluorocarbon is to tie a miniature 15# swivel to the leadcore or braid with a palomar and then a trilene-type knot of the mono to the swivel.
