Breaking News; There are Salmon in The Broad Lake

Post by C-Hawk »

The Derby is an excellent tool to determine the status of our fishery. I am much more optimistic for finally seeing action on the Broad Lake this summer after this weekend's results. Both personally and anecdotally. We lost a a 6 lber at the boat and I know of many more being taken. Phew, I thought the sky was falling. More after the derby!

Did you really believe they all were gone??

LC is a love hate lake. It can both frustrating and rewarding.

My last 6 days on LC were frustrating, but, you gotta play to win!!!

Great post. You really do have to put the time in. We would all do well to remember this, myself included.

Anyone looking at the numbers of returning salmon at both the Winooski fish lift, and the Hatchery should be concerned. Downward trend, and can't blame lampreys any more. The fish I am catching, and not all from the Broad Lake, are vigourous, fat fish. My new friend Tracy caught a 5.5 salmon on Saturday and were going to bring it in to weigh, but it only measured 20 and a quarter. I will show some pics later.

We are seeing huge numbers of lamprey wounds on lakers. I caught a 19 incher Saturday with 5 wounds including one attached. We are seeing most fish with wounds and 25% with lamprey attached when we get within sight of he fish (though a lot are popping off when we net the fish and getting through the holes in the net. We killed 8-9 lamprey this weekend on 45ish fish

Lamprey are still a problem for sure. But I believe Double Crested Cormorants are the biggest problem now.

I think the biggest problem is we need a change of mid level leadership at VTFW.
