Surprise outings: Tuesday-Thursday

Post by digitroll (ron) »

This is the time of year before the big freeze descends upon us that frostbite fishing becomes an easter egg hunt.

Tuesday:

Randy and I had a short day 9:30 am - 1:30 pm. Launched out of the private launch and with a strong south wind we worked our way down to Barber point. Not fast and furious we scratched out a 5 for 7 outing with 4 salmon and 1 LT. Some deep around the 70 ft mark and a fewer up higher.

Wednesday:

We (Randy/Tom) launched out of Converse at 9 am and ran over to the unicorn to set-up out of the northwest to west wind. Just like Tuesday a slow start as Whalon's has been very slow as of late. Picked up after 3 hours with a nice brown and 4 salmon motored down to the Snake Den. Started out slow and by the time we finished past Partridge we landed a double brown/salmon and another 19" salmon with a LT. Finished perfect today 9 for 9 at 3 pm. 6 salmon / 2 Browns / 1 LT. Most bites came between 25 and 40 feet down. Brass/Gold Crazy Ivan spoons performed best.

Yesterday was my last trip out for 2017. Randy is out today with a crew fishing south of the Mason line and this will be his last trip for 2017. Looking forward to 2018 already. Nice break after a busy year fishing all 12 months for the first time ever.

Good luck out there tomorrow. Light winds.

Great to see the new section for tactics. Some good stuff already there.

Digitroll:

You posted some "how to" videos on the forum earlier this year. Could you please repeat them in the new section?

Your reporting on results with Surprise definitely prolong the season for all of us! Thanks.

Ron, Thanks for the play by play of Tuesday & Wednesday. Thursday was my last outing of 2017 on Surprise and was shared with friends Dan Adams & John McClary.

Here are some photos of the week.

Wednesday Ron ran the back of the boat and kept my Boss Tom Booska entertained with catches and I ran the Pointy End.

Wednesday brought a Cold Bluebird day. Dan, John and I delayed our start to 10 am at my house to let it warm all the way up to 15. Our plan launch at Arnold Bay and fish Barbor point and Fishville perhaps fo the last of this season.

On the eves this morning.

A bit of ice in Arnold was no challenge for this crew and we were soon off heater fired and canvas closed. We set up at Barbor point and a couple circuits in a couple hours yielded only one salmon. Running a spread of 5 rods. 2 riggers 30 +45, 2 discs out 100, and one longline down the shoot 50 ft.

We pulled and headed to Fishville. Birds pounding the water greeted us.

We dropped the same gear and as we hit the spot we had a double salmon and this hansom brown.
Salmon on deep rigger and brown on disc. The brown measured 18 1/2 and had a girth of 15 inches!

John landed the salmon and Dan the brown which provided a back and forth battle that was a pleasure to watch.

A few turns round in the next 1 1/2 hours yielded another 4 salmon and a laker. Pulled at 3. A great day shared and a Beautiful finish to 2017. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

Good eye. We did restring that rod on Wednesday out on the boat during a lull. Fishing in November and December during the hunting seasons is a great time of year to be on the water with light boat traffic and some of the best fishing of the year.
