Converse 10/22

Post by tmcaul »

Headed out of Converse around 9AM and motored over to the north side of Split Rock. After some initial prospecting (we saw several fish surfacing close to the point and tried to troll close to the point with a planer board setup) we settled on a northern troll towards Essex in around 100 FOW.

Setup was riggers around 70' and 60', a dipsy at 50' and a stern planer down 45' and 250' back. Only spoons in the spread.

Started marking bait and fish down around 90' and soon thereafter one of the riggers fired, FISH ON. After several tense minutes we had the fish in the net, my son's personal best silver on Champlain.

After releasing the fish and setting back up we turned around to troll through the same area. This time the port rigger fired and before we had the fish in the boat the stern planer hit, both cookie cutter silvers.

We made another pass through the same water and had the dipsy fire with another shaker. All in all we went 9 for 9 with 4 salmon and 5 lakers. Far and away our best day of the season. We kept one of the badly hooked salmon for dinner but all the other fish were released. All the salmon were bright and clean of any lamprey wounds.

All fish hit small honeybees and MP6s. Black and purple seemed to be hottest color but the big salmon took a green and white MP6.

We are hoping this is the beginning of a much better bite than the one we have experienced for the last few months.

Thanks Tom for sharing... This is a very nice salmon.
It will be nice to see a bunch of them during the frostbite derby.
