Reelax's Datillios derby report - Day#1 - video added- Day 2 added
Put together a large crew for the Datillios derby. Raz, MarknFish, Da Comitted and I got together at converse at 445am this morning to launch into some major waves... We slowly made our way to split and turned south along newyork and setup. We ran 2 riggers at 20 and 30ish with sliders. 2 slide divers, one with ring kit at 68 and the other at 90ish. We then setup the otters with lead core. 2 colors, 5 colors, and a mini slide diver rounded out an 8 rod set with a full core down the shoot.
We looked like a pincushion with the rods deployed in all directions, but we started slowly picking away at fish. 1, 2,3 salmon, we reach Westport bay and turn around. Headed back north I give the helm to Mark, and Dave is next up. The center shoot rod with 8 colors out with a glow back black and white sutton 61 on fires...
Key here is this is the ONLY rod with the new procure alwife gel on it in the spread!!!!!
The rod starts to let line out, zzzzzz.. Dave grabs it and the fish digs for the bottom... 5 min.... Wow it's big...must slow to 1.8 mph...
This fish, with 7 colors still out then attempts a jump, but can only muster a 3/4 breach and tail walk for .5 sec. We all saw it and all went OMG!!!!!! We thought it was a pig laker and at this point I could see it was bigger Than Jaws!
5 min later we are getting to the backing... It surfaces again and we get a good look... It's a monster silver!!!
Zzzzzzzzzzzz...zzzzz...Dave works her tirelessly... Zzzzz...
Digging so deep almost in prop with 40 foot of line out...
zzzzz.zzzzzzz.......zzzz
It's time... I crouch down, Dave lifts... I slide the net under her.. She doesn't even know.... Lift... It's in the net!!!! She's ours.....
Wow it's a huge fish!!! 2 lbs bigger than Jaws and over an inch longer.... Congrats Dave Adams on a great fight with no mistakes and a cool attitude.. I of course lost it once netted
We fished till 3pm, almost finished a slam. We boated a little steelhead and a few lakers....
Finished a brown short of a grandslam....
Think we ended up in the lower double didgits today in 3-4 foot waves we worked hard.
Here is the happy crew at the launch....
here is Happy fisherman at weigh in..
Here is what all those alwifes see just before they are dinner..
Give you an idea of the girth of this beast!!!
Here is the spoon we got her on... Bought at Datillios.
Glow back
Well it was a fun day, and we all look forward to another fun day of the same tomorrow... I'll be looking for 2nd place....
Here is a link to the video of the netting... Please lower volume if you are offended by a few fbombs

Dave is off to drop this puppy where she belongs at Doug Yasners to be preserved for eternity..

That is really a great fish. Congratulations to the whole crew! Two different Pro-cure scents a 9lb+ salmon on smelt gel and 11lb+ salmon on Alewife gel. As I said before, at least it doesn't seem to scare them off

All I can say is it’s a team effort. If anyone thinks trolling is just dragging lines through the water has not felt the rush of adrenaline that you get when the fish you think is a lake trout turns into be the salmon of a lifetime. Once that fish was on the backing it was a constant click of the drag as the classic Penn reel was just dialed in perfect for this fish. It took all four of us to get the beast in the boat Matt on the net, Mark on the helm and Gerry working the video. Today was our day as the stars aligned and the fish ended up in the net and soon on the wall, memorialized forever.
A great team and a great day on the water with a contender fish on the board. See you in the morning fellas let’s see if we can make lightning strike twice.

They are going to have to rename this derby the "relax classic". Just a beautiful fish and the conditions made it all that more special. I can only dream of landing a beauty like that! Great job by the whole crew... my hat is off to you! I hope you stick another pig tomorrow.
