Maiden Voyage

Post by Greenhorn »

I took a look at the 10 day forecast and today was the best day over that period. I couldn't take it anymore, so I took the day off and went on my first fishing trip of the year to Champlain today. I arrived at the converse bay launch at about 7:00 and launched through a bunch of loose ice that had blow in around the dock. I made it through the mess without breaking anything. I motored to my spot and started fishing in about 20 feet of water. I was flat lining small stick baits. I got my first salmon at 8:30, a 3 lb 12 oz fish on a pink Yo-zuri. It was fairly calm out there for a while, and as the day brighten up, I switched to lead core line and trolled with one color out and a 50 foot leader on my offshore tackle planer board. This led to two more salmon including my personal best 5 lb 8 oz beauty. I have posted a picture of the Yo-zuri that worked on the last two salmon (and I lost another one on this lure also). One 3 lb laker finished off the day for me. I feel much better now that I have a day on the water under my belt.

Nice salmon! It's encouraging to see 5+ pounders on the regular here.

As I sit inside during a mid-March blizzard, I find it hard to believe I was out in my boat just six days ago. It just proves that we should take advantage of good weather when we can to hit the lake. I'm not sure when the weather will allow me on the lake again, but after a good start, I'm anxious to get back out there. I fully intend to beat my personal best again this year. We'll see what the fishing gods have to say about that!
