Ground Hog day "Silver Hog" aboard Surprise.

Post by digitroll (ron) »

Fishing aboard the Surprise today and this big hog Master Angler 24" salmon saw it's shadow at Noon today off Split Rock. Randy told me that mean't there was 6 more weeks of Frostbite fishing!

Fish hit a silver and pink custom taped blank down 40 feet. Went 2 for 3. Lost another decent fish that crossed lines on us and the hooks pulled.

The menu was smoked Canadian bacon and carrot soup. Thanks Randy for Tuesday's and today's outing on the Surprise! Nice new motor on her!

Great day to be on the water! 12 months in a row now! Thanks to Randy for extending my season December into February with many trips on the Surprise.

Nice job! And thx for the look. Hopefully the ramp will stay open for another 6 weeks. It looks like you had a little ice to start out. How about coming by Sunday morning to flush the ramp area? That's a good idea as opposed to breaking sonar transducer mounts. Of course mine is now pretty well protected with duct tape! But I cant afford to bust up anymore trailer lights. I had to replace the broken one for inspection and you cant buy just one.

That ice video was from Tuesday Ken when it was 14 degrees at the ramp 9:30 am. Randy and Pete used a shovel and ice chisel to break the ice from the back of the boat before putting the boat in the water. Trailer lights don't like pushing big chunks of ice. :)

Yesterday the ramp was ice free and 28 degrees at the ramp at 9:00 am.

The 10 day forecast looks great! Two 6F lows and a 13F the rest up in the 20's and highs 27-32F. Unreal for this time of year. If this trend continues it will be just like last winter. Should be some great March fishing when the fleet comes out of hibernation!

Ken, try Harbor Freight, they sell single trailer lights if you need them instead of buying the whole set.......Nice day on the water guys, keep up the good work, at least someone is getting fish.

Jimbow,
The problem was LED and matching shapes. They are not std trailer lights.

I won't complain if we make it a few more weeks. The trouble that I've noticed in the past years is that it doesn't take real cold days/nights to freeze around the launch when the water in the shallows is just above freezing. Then its all about the south wind getting in there to bust up the ice and circulate some warmer water to shore.

I'm just worried with the lack of precipitation that we'll have another low lake level this year! But great post, nice to see you guys out there.

Thanks guys for sharing your adventures on the water.
During this slow time when most of use are only dreaming about being on the water, some adventurous folks are actually doing it.
