SonarChart Live with Tide & Water Level correction

When SonarChart™ Live was first introduced it rendered contouring without any interaction with underlying chart data. This means that the data coming directly from your wireless sonar transducer was taken at face value and used to draw contours reflecting actual depths recorded under current conditions no matter what level of tide or water level adjustment you may have been experiencing at that time. When you returned to the same location at a different time, or on a different day, the previously recorded contours shown in SonarChart Live would start to change due to the influence of new data collected under new conditions. This may have yielded unexpected elevation changes.

With iOS Version 8.2 & Android version 6.0 a feature was introduced that will allow you to enable automatic tide adjustment (Marine) or manual water level adjustment (inland lakes & rivers). Essentially, SonarChart Live will subtract the tide height (or manual water level offset) in real time from the data recorded from your wireless sonar transducer. The contours drawn will reflect low tide normalized depths using a nearby tide station verified by you.

How this works:
When a wireless sonar device is detected the SonarChart Live recording will start. The app will then ask you to select the type of waterway in which you are traveling: Marine or Inland. If Marine is chosen, the app will then show you available nearby tide stations from which to make your selection. Depending on your location, for example the proximity to an inlet, the closest tide station may not always be the most appropriate tide station.

Should you wish to avoid correction of any kind, simply tap the X to close the window and no adjustment will be applied to your SonarChart Live view.

While underway and using SonarChart Live, contours and depth area color shading will reflect the values subtracting the current tide condition reflected in the chosen tide station. For regions with a high tidal exchange it is possible that you may be recording in an area at high tide that would otherwise be dry at low tide. The below example is taken in New England where tide exchange can be in excess of 11 ft. The yellow track line indicates the path of the boat at high tide. The red arrows indicate an area where the boat has passed into an area where the depth below the transducer is 11 ft or less. Subtracting the 11 ft tide change, the depth value is zero, so the SonarChart Live has no contours to draw and is masked. As depth below the transducer increases beyond the 11ft tide change, SonarChart Live begins to draw contouring to reflect the normalized, low tide condition

Depth information collected by using SonarChart Live is shared with Navionics to create SonarChart, our HD bathymetry layer available for both plotter and mobile charts. The depth information comes to Navionics without tide correction or manual water level offset. Navionics applies Water Level offset or Tide Adjustment to the raw data during normal processing procedures before SonarChart updates are issued

Chart symbols and icons will have different meanings.  Generally all of the symbols, abbreviations and icons found on our charts are based on those of the government.  For a full listing you can find this document on the NOAA website at https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/cha ... tNo1.pdf.
All of our chart products also include the Xplain™ features, which provides additional, easy-to-understand details for chart icons and symbols.  Accessing this information is easy on your Navionics mobile apps!

Get chart details directly on the map screen by using the cross hairs. Tap the pop-up or the question mark to go to the object information screen. You will receive a list of icons/objects in the general area and you can find more information by tapping the ones with an arrow ( > ) symbol.

As part of Navionics ongoing product enhancement efforts, hundreds of new and updated lakes within Quebec and Ontario are now available. So far, nearly 800 new lakes have been released in Quebec and more than 900 in Ontario.
With new maps on so many lakes, anglers can spend more time fishing, both on open water this summer and on the ice during the long winter months. Chart details of up to 1 HD contours make it easier to quickly study changes in the bottom structure and find the most likely spots to cast out for smallmouth bass, troll for walleye or target cool, deep waters for summertime lake trout.

With most mobile devices, location technology is built into the device. Your approximate location is determined using the internal A-GPS (assisted GPS) receiver. This receiver is assisted by cell signals, but does not rely on them entirely. Once you have downloaded Navionics mobile applications to your mobile device, they are resident on your device and are a reliable tool to access charts even when not in cell range.

Please be aware that some mobile devices do not have an internal GPS receiver.

We have not tested our apps with any third party external GPS receivers. These devices may function with our apps, but since we have not tested them we cannot guarantee their functionality.

Also, please keep in mind that the Navionics mobile app is for recreational and reference use only. The internal GPS receivers on mobile devices are not as reliable as what you would find on a GPS chart plotter. The Navionics mobile apps are a useful tool for reference, planning and can be an adequate backup GPS to a chart plotter. However, for serious navigational purposes, we recommend using our plotter cards for use with GPS chart plotters.

If you are experiencing an issue with determining your GPS position, please follow the procedure listed below:

iPhone

If you are not able to display your position on your Navionics mobile app for iPhone, you are going to want to make sure that your ?Location Services? are turned on. You want to go to your main iPhone menu, and go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Turn on the ?Location Services? function as well as any apps that utilize the GPS function in your phone, including the Navionics app(s).

If this does not correct your issue, try closing out of all running app and restarting your device. Once restarted, go back into the Navionics app to see if the position has corrected itself.

If your location is still inaccurate, open your Maps app and determine if your location is accurately being reported. If it is not, it is possible there is something wrong with your installation of iOS and/or the hardware in your device .

If your location is accurate in the Maps app, but you are still unable to locate your position properly in the Navionics app, please submit a ticket by going to http://navionics.force.com/MobileTech. Be sure to note in your ticket that you have already tried forcing GPS services to refresh (as this will be the first thing we ask you) and confirmed your location permissions.

iPad

Navionics mobile HD apps are compatible with both the iPad WiFi + Cellular and the iPad WiFi-only models; however, be advised that the WiFi-only model iPads do not have an internal GPS receiver. This device will not be able to display your location when outside of WiFi range. If you are within WiFi range your experiences may vary. Not all WiFi connections are created equal so you will need a registered WiFi network (such as your marina network, at home, or at work) to generate a correct position. Using an unregistered network such as a mobile hotspot may not give you correct positioning. Articles online also explain that tethering mobile devices (such as iPhone to iPad) will not work. If you are using the Navionics mobile app for the iPad, we recommend using the WiFi + Cellular models, which will have an internal GPS receiver.

If you are using the WiFi + Cellular model and you are still not able to determine your location you are going to want to make sure that your ?Location Services? are turned on. You want to go to your main iPad menu, and go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Turn on the ?Location Services? function as well as any apps that utilize the GPS function in your iPad, including the Navionics app(s). If you are unsure if your iPad has an internal GPS, tap on Location Services in your iPad settings. At the top of your screen, in light gray text, it will say "Location Services uses GPS, Bluetooth, and crowd-sourced WiFi hotspot and cell tower locations to determine your approximate location". If it doesn't say it uses GPS, your Navionics app will not accurately track your position.

If the information provided above does not correct your issue, try closing out of all running app and restarting your device.

Android platform

If your GPS position is not being displayed correctly, please make sure that your mobile device has an internal GPS receiver. If it does not have an internal GPS receiver, you will not be able to determine your location outside of WiFi range. If you are using a device with an internal GPS receiver, please follow these instructions to resolve your issue:
Go into your device "Settings"
Select "Location"
Turn "Location" OFF and restart your device
Go back into your Location Settings and turn "Location" back ON
Three options are available for utilizing Location within your device under "Location Method":
GPS, WiFi and mobile networks - uses all three options to triangulate your position, so is the most accurate and uses the most battery life
WiFi and mobile networks - uses only WiFi and mobile networks to determine your location and uses less battery life
GPS only - uses the GPS receiver only to retrieve your position
If your location is still inaccurate, open your Maps app and determine if your location is accurately being reported. If it is not, it is possible there is something wrong with your installation of Android OS and/or the hardware in your device
