Lowrance and or Navionics

Post by ThreeBuoys »

Hello,
I have 2 units (1) HDS7 Touch, Gen2
(1) HDS9 Gen2. Both units are connected via ethernet and are both part of a NMEA2K network. The other variable is a Lowrance AUtopilot as part of the NMEA2K network. I have or had a working Navionics Platinum+ chip.
All was working fine, until recently.
The symtom that appeared 1st was whenever both units were tuned on, they would boot up and one or both units would beep and say "No autopilot computer found. I would say OK, and the autopilot worked fine.
Recently, the HDS9 unit (where the Navionics chip is located) is hanging and constantly rebooting. I thought it was the HDS9 unit itself as I read where these units can have power issues.
Yesterday afternoon, I had time for investigate further.
After fighting to get the HDS9 unit to boot to a place where I could do a hard reset...I did. NO better.
I removed the Nav chip from the HDS9 unit and placed it in the HDS7. The problem appeared to move. The HDS7 would hang and then reboot itself.
Not sure if the Chip is the issue no some setting.
If I remove the chip altogether, both units seem to work fine......
Any assistance or ideas would be of great help.
Does the chip call up the GPS when trying to load? The units are set to use the AP-1 unit that came with the Lowrance Autopilot I believe

IF you have not already I would make sure you have the latest updates on the Hds units I have noticed when my autopilot looses power or one day my nema 2 k plug was loose on back of Hds I would get no autopilot computer message may be worth remaking all plug connections with dielectric grease I will be following your progress good luck as I have a Hds 9 gen 3 with the autopilot

Icedawg,
I will keep you updated on what I find.
At this point, everything points to the Navionics Chip.
I have a case with them and they will replace the chip.

IceDawg,
It appears to have been my Navionics chip. I received the new one in the mail on Friday, and inserted it before fishing yesterday. No errors at all. Wondering if I should remove it from the unit every time. I admit I have not touched it or removed it since April. I suppose they could intermittently go bad.

Yes, Navionics support was great. Glad that was the issue and not Navico (Lowrance).
