Leadcore Question
Just wondering how most guys are running Leadcore.
I had a couple of Okuma convector 30D reels hanging around. They had 20 LB mono on them.
I stripped off some of the Mono tied the Lead to the Mono via Willis knot. The reels have enough room for 5 colors.
I then tied about 30 feet of 20LB Floro as leader.
Sound about right?
I figure I will run all 5 colors and attach Offshore Planer to the Mono.
I have no idea what kind of depth I will get.
Can anyone shed some light on that?
Thanks,

Re: Leadcore Question
I would say you got it perfect... 5 colors depending on speed will usually run between 20 and 25ft.
If you add a clip weight to them in Late June and July they can probably produce for you all summer.

That will work, but I have always used the suffix brand 15 or 27 lb...

Thanks Reelax

Re: Leadcore Question
To mono backer clips will damage leadcore eventually

I typically clip it up far enough on the lead so you can get it off without effecting the fight.

Re: Leadcore Question
I put mine on a fly rod. Absorb the smack some of the bigger Atlantic's deliver on the core.

Re: Leadcore Question
Not a bad thought.
I have an 8 weight large arbor reel I could play with as well.

Re: Leadcore Question
My experience using 27lb leadcore. I had used leadcore for quite some time. Their is no exact science to leadcore. So many variables come into play
Here are a few issues to consider
Water temp affects depth as does speed. If running one on each side of the boat. Turn slightly and one sinks as it slows and the other rises as it increases speed.
27lb is the heaviest per foot and achieves greatest depth per foot of line out.
Never clip any weight direct to leadcore as it can create a weak spot
I normally clip to my backing just above the leadcore / backing connection point
20' of leader is sufficient in my opinion
20lb mono is good backing. I run 30lb power pro
I never run any thing longer than a 7 color core and I run segments only. 1-3-5-7.
Copper line achieves greater depths versus leadcore
100' of 45lb copper will get you to 22'-25' depending on speed
Just some thoughts to consider. N my two cents

Re: Leadcore Question
Bigfish ... how do you run the segments? Do you tie in short sections of mono between sections of leadcore? If so, how long are those sections?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Leadcore Question
This may be more than most are willing to do. I set up 2 reels for each length of lead. So I have 2 reels with a 1 color 2 with 3 colors 2 with five colors 2 with 7 colors. I take a reel of the same size. Wind the lead core on first then fill the spool with braid or mono backing. Braid lets the core deeper while mono lets it ride higher in the water column
I use either 30 lb power pro or 20 lb mono. Once reel is full I wind the backing on the reel I'm gonna use and lead core ends up on top . I run mostly tekota reels and some okuma reels.
Tekota 600lc work great for 1and 3 color, then either okuma 45 or 55's for the 5 and 7 color.
Running drop weights on the cores I can get the down as deep as needed
I have kept a lot of records over the years out how deep different combos will run.
Best way to find out how deep is to deploy over deep water in a fairly flat area of the lake and troll in to shallower water until you stick that particular set up on the bottom. I do the same for divers.
Keep a log of speed, water temp. And what offering is on the end. After a few season you'll be able to quickly know how deep what is running
Lake current will have some affect as well. Different trolling direction will affect things too.
You can also tie in 2-4 ' of mono between segments of leadcore and clip your board on the mono.
I just prefer the versatility of having leadcore segments on individual reels.
One scenario
1 color of leadcore with a jr. Thunderstick with 50' of 20 lb mono out will get to 12'. Trolling at 2.0 GPS speed. That is the type of info I record.
I run about 15-20' of 15 lb mono. And a 6-7' flouro carbon leader of 10 lb
Forgot to mention I just switch out the reels on the rods depending which core I want to use
I do the same with copper 50-100-150-200-250-300.
Hope this helped

Re: Leadcore Question
Wow. You are very experienced with this. In my scenerio that I mentioned above, I am pretty much tied into running just one presentation. 5 colors with a mono backing. Unless I clip a snap weight on the Mono. Not sure what result I would get.
