Raymarine SPX-5R w/P70R C Autopilot

Post by Shake-n-Bake »

It looks like this product is no longer manufactured. Just wondering why they stopped production so soon. Still thinking about purchasing one while still available. Any thoughts on this unit?

Same AP but new improved compass and new computer to support the compass (EV 200). Last I heard they were working on the software update for the new compass and this unit should be available soon for cable steered boats. The hydraulic AP had good reviews this past season with the same new compass as it was released last Spring.

$2,100 is the suggested price.

I hate to spend the money but I fish solo quite a lot. I'm hoping this will make things easier. Probably will not help with a strong head wind but should be good most of the time. My wife is good with it so I had better jump quick! She must be up to something! HaHa

I use mine in 2 to 3 footers with no problem. As long as you manage speed the pilot holds course. Ray marine makes a great unit. With great service right next door in NH.

2013 was my first year with it and trust me in saying you won't be disappointed. Like you I fish solo more often than not and like everyone else I have no idea what I did without it! Even with people on board it's handy. Good luck with it and let us know how much you like it.

I have used the old version (Sportpilot plus) similar to this for 15 years and would not hesitate to buy a new one if mine suddenly died

I'm posting to this old thread to ask a question about the ev-200. I'm using Navionics on a Nexus 7 tablet for GPS right now, and it's great. I'm sure there are tons of awesome features with a networked plotter/autopilot, but for now, since I can't link an android tablet, I'm wondering if I can still use the EV as a standalone unit...just input a heading and let it steer? I'd likely get an NMEA plotter at some point, but the $1800 EV would be a big purchase for me initially. Thanks!
