School me on lake trout jigs

Post by BottomDollar »

Hey folks, I'm looking for some basic information on what you all use when jigging for lakers on those days when the salmon bite shuts off or never gets going.

Is it as simple as putting a jig on one of my braid/fluoro trolling rods with a level wind reel? What kind of jigs/weight do you use?

Seems like this might also be fun for the occasional passenger on the boat who gets bored with trolling when it's slow.

Thanks!

I have Cabela real imge 2 oz jigs. They work well and hit bottom fast. You can also use bucktail 1-2 oz jigs. Braid works great to ensure you have proper feel of bottom and strike.

Good luck Andy, it works well and can make for a great fight.

Any reel with the right line can work.

Thanks Matt. I'll give it a try with those jigs on my next slow day.

Will Nolan makes 1-2oz jigs and Dockside sells them.
They work well bare and with a plastic 4-6" paddle tail grub or other plastic. White works good to use for a tail.

Thanks! I may be in that neighborhood tomorrow, I'll take a look.

Let us know how your jigging goes. I have tryed it with no success. I don't have a lock on trolling motor so i get a drift and staying on the bottom is impossible.

I'm fortunate enough to have spot lock on my Minn Kota. I got it for autopilot but figured it could come in handy for jigging over deep water. I'll probably give it a go tomorrow in a couple of known spots.

If ts calm, I use my vexilar Fl18 with bottom lock.
Works good, i use an old rod bottom on one my rod holders an hang the cable off that.
Its fun to follow a school of big perch.
