Lake Trout on fly, help for new boater

Post by gseries69 »

Hey Folks,

I'm interested in chasing some lake trout on fly gear. My main concern is staying safe as I don't have much experience boating on big water. My boat is a 16' Lund Fury with a 35hp. My initial thought was to run out of Mallets Bay and just follow the shore up towards the Winooski. Any lakers in that area mid April thru mid May? What wind directions should I just avoid? Any other areas I should target?

Thanks

I catch them in that area trolling with my flyrods all the time. If you think that you can reach bottom in 10-20 fow, then you should be able to catch them casting as well. Just south of the cut in the Fill would be good. South wind might drive you in, but you should be alright up to 12 mph.

Thanks C-Hawk. I shouldn't have any problem getting down that deep with a shooting head.
