Lake Champlain Anglers' Temperature Database

Post by EricL »

Hi everyone!

We (SUNY Plattsburgh) have developed a database for sharing water temperature measurements. We are calling it the Lake Champlain Anglers' Temperature Database (LCATdb). Our goal is to collect and share water temperature measurements from all around the lake (not just at our data buoy).

We're looking for some people to test the system and provide feedback. We're hope that submitting AND viewing the data will become part of your routine.

Please consider adding your measurements to our database: https://lcatdb.org

Notes on use:
After logging on to the page, you'll see a map containing recent observations. You can click the pin to see the measurement provided there.

To submit your own, click either Quick Submit or Register. Quick Submit will create an anonymous account that is tied to your device. Registering allows your e-mail to be tied to your account. After you register anonymously or regularly, it will ask you what sensors you use. Click Add New and add a depth and temperature sensor. We assume most folks use FishHawk, but we can add more to the list if you know of any others.

After adding the sensors (you only have to do this once if you keep using your anonymous [it's stored in your computer or phone] or regular account), you can submit a reading. You can slide the pin to your location or use your phone's GPS to get your location. Then simply enter the depth you measured and the temperature. Press Save and Publish and you're done! Your entry will appear on the map!

Some notes:
- You can submit measurements from any depth you'd like. Feel free to post the depth of 52F, that'd be perfect!
- This is a work in progress! Please be sure to let us know if you have any feedback!
- The goal is for everyone to benefit, so please post your observations but also look at the recent observations.
- An Android/iOS app is in the works.
- We're also looking into merging the operational measurements of temperatures by the long-term monitoring groups in NY and VT.

This effort is supported by Lake Champlain Sea Grant, SUNY Plattsburgh, and was entirely web designed by an undergraduate computer science major during Summer 2017.

We've been overwhelmed by the interest, generosity, and community of Lake Champlain United. Thank you so much!

Best to everyone,
Eric

This is great hope we can get Anglers to join in this by adding Temps from there fish hawk probes at the ideal fishing temps for the Salmon and Lake Trout would save anglers lots of guess work for when they first hit the water, knowing that sweet spot to start fishing at first thing...!! keep up the good works for the Anglers of Lake Champlain.

This is awesome! I don't have a fishhawk or electronics to determine it, but this would be very valuable information. Very cool

It would be cool if the FishHawk could send the data directly to the database with android/Iphone app
